True Detective: Season 3 Revived With Deadwood Creator

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto has already written the first two episodes.

Following a two-year hiatus, True Detective will reportedly return, as work on a third season is now underway.

Entertainment Weekly reports that series creator Nic Pizzolatto has already written the first two episodes for the potential Season 3 and is working with Deadwood creator and Emmy-winning writer-producer David Milch.

However, HBO has not yet officially greenlit a third season and it's unlikely Milch will serve as the new showrunner if True Detective does indeed return. Milch is expected to only be involved with the screenwriting process.

Last year, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys gave an update on True Detective, saying the series is not dead, but HBO just doesn't "have a take for a third season yet." The network was also open to the idea of bringing in a new writer, with Pizzolatto supervising the new season. Matthew McConaughey has also expressed interest in reprising his role as Rust Cohle.
