Zelda: Breath of the Wild Patch Reduces Framerate Problems

Memory magic.

The newly-released 1.1.1 patch for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild seemingly removes or reduces the severity of many of the game's dips in framerate, on Wii U and Switch (in both handheld and docked mode).

Nintendo's notes for the 167MB patch simply read: "Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience." However, players on Twitter (including our own Zelda reviewer), RedditNeoGAF, and YouTube have all reported improved performance since installing the update.

Anecdotally, trouble spots - particularly areas with a lot of long grass - do seem to have received a significant boost, although certain areas with particular problems (which I won't reveal for fear of spoilers) still do suffer from consistent dips.

Framerate problems were a key concern in our otherwise sparkling Breath of the Wild review, and it has since become apparent that the game runs worse in the Switch's docked mode than when used as a handheld.

IGN has contacted Nintendo for comment.
