Aquaman Designs Suggest Lord of the Rings Underwater

Jason Momoa presented conceptual footage.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa appeared at CinemaCon Wednesday to promote his DC superhero's solo film, which hits theaters December 2018.

Momoa, who said he was just hours away from flying to Australia to begin working on Aquaman, introduced a brief video and recorded message from the film's director, James Wan.

The video included no actual movie footage as filming has not yet begun. Instead, attendees screened conceptual imagery to get a sense of the scope and design of Wan's film. And it looked truly epic, the director's grandest undertaking yet. Furious 7 may have shown what Wan could do in terms of action sequences, but this Aquaman video hinted at what Wan might achieve when working at a scale not dissimilar to Peter Jackson's Middle-earth saga.

Based on this video, Aquaman will feature some truly epic underwater battles. There were some shots that resembled a Star Wars fleet battle but in the depths of the ocean. As Wan explained, he wants viewers to initially think they're looking at small ships but once the image zooms in they'll realize these are actually people riding sharks. (Move over lightsaber-wielding Batman fighting a shark!) Expect Atlanteans to look more like they're flying underwater than swimming per se given their powers.

The conceptual video showcased the film's overall look, from the high fantasy design elements of Atlantis (think Lord of the Rings underwater) to the various, scary-looking sea monsters that inhabit the realm of Aquaman. (Yes, Wan's background in horror was evident here.) The images flashed by quickly so it was tough to tell if certain creatures were supposed to be comics characters such as Charybdis, Creature King or the Trench.

At least according to this concept art video, villains Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson) and Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) will resemble their comics counterparts, particularly their distinctive helmet/mask designs.

There were several images of Amber Heard's Mera and Willem Dafoe's Vulko (this artwork looked a lot like the same art of the character I saw during my Justice League set visit last year). Overall, the Atlantean structures and armor designs were not as shiny or pristine-looking as those of Wonder Woman's Themyscira and Amazons.

While no actual plot details were revealed, Wan did describe Aquaman as being a bit of an origin film. The video included imagery of scenes between the hero's parents, Atlantea (Nicole Kidman is reportedly a contender for the role) and human lighthouse keeper Tom Curry (expected to be portrayed by Temuera Morrison).

If James Wan's Aquaman ends up anywhere close to what this CinemaCon video suggested then the film could prove a creative high point for the DCEU.
