Call of Duty 2017 Possibly Returning to World War 2 Setting

Back from the future?

Seemingly leaked marketing materials appear to indicate that Sledgehammer Games' 2017 installment of Call of Duty will be subtitled "WW2" - something IGN's sources have also indicated.

Sent anonymously to YouTube channel TheFamilyVideoGamers, images of promotional materials and steelbook designs show beach landings and World War 2-era clothing and weapons.

This tallies with reports from our sources, who have said that the game will feature a World War 2 setting in some respect, and have seen similar marketing materials.

As always, rumors like these are subject to fakery, or may even come from outdated information.

If true, however, this move has been quite a long time coming. Fans have repeatedly called for a return to the setting (the series cut its teeth with World War 2 games), and publisher Activision was even saying a WW2 game was possible back in 2015.

Earlier this year, an Activision investor call sparked speculation when a presentation slide explained that 2017's entry "will take Call of Duty back to its roots".

It's become something of a tradition for Call of Duty games to spring a springtime leak - around the same time last year, insiders correctly predicted 2016's Infinite Warfare's setting, alongside early marketing materials showing its reveal dates popping up.

We have contacted Activision for comment on the latest rumors.
