Despite a mediocre opening weekend, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children placed first at the box office, earning $28.5 million.
As noted by Variety, Tim Burton's new fantasy film is off to a slow start domestically, but is showing promise in international markets, having currently made $36.5 million oversees.
The film still has a ways to go if it's to reach profitability for 20th Century Fox, thanks to a production budget of $110 million.
As of right now, the studio remains unsure as to whether or not Miss Peregrine's will get a sequel. "It’s a promising start, but it’s too early to tell," Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson said, adding, "There are multiple books and they are best-sellers, so the door is open."
This weekend also brought with it the release of Deepwater Horizon. The Mark Wahlberg-led disaster drama placed second with a meager $20.6 million, coming in far short of its hefty production costs of approximately $120 million.
Last week's leader, The Magnificent Seven, slipped to third with $15.7 million, remaining one place ahead of Storks, which earned $13.8 million during its second weekend. Meanwhile, Masterminds had an underwhelming debut, failing to crack the top five. Instead, Jared Hess' new comedy, which wasn't received all that well by critics, placed sixth with just $6.6 million during its first weekend in theaters.
