Legends of Tomorrow Producer on Justice Society Easter Eggs

Look closely at the JSA's headquarters...

Thursday night’s new episode of Legends of Tomorrow will introduce the Justice Society of America, as the Legends travel to 1942 and encounter the iconic team.

The episode includes a trip to the Justice Society headquarters and eagle eyed viewers may spot some notable inclusions from the comics. Explaining the approach to the headquarters, Legends EP Marc Guggenheim explained, “I pulled a lot of comic book reference for the art department. I really, really wanted it to have that sort of brownstone [look], chock full of trophies." He also said, with a grin, that his big demand was, "There's got to be a table with the Justice Society emblem on it!”

Guggenheim added, “As far as the various different Easter eggs, those were all the brainchildren of the art department and the set dressers. Sometimes I'll specifically call out, ‘Oh, I'd really love to see X, Y, or Z in there,’ but didn't do that in this case. I think they crushed it. I think they did an amazing, amazing job and that was a real location that we brought in set dressing for. We didn't build that as a set.”

Introducing an entire superhero team at once means a ton of new superhero costumes as well, all on the accelerated schedule and specific budget of a TV series. Guggenheim was asked if it helped, in a way, that the Justice Society were 1940s heroes, so their costumes could perhaps be more direct adaptations than usual – with the classic feel allowing to lean into more heightened aspects.

Explained Guggenheim, “For sort of the first time -- this was obviously the beginning of the season -- Maya Mani, who is our superhero costume designer across Flash, Arrow, and Legends, was busy building all the new suits for not just Legends, but Flash and Arrow as well. So Vicky Mulholland, our costume designer on Legends, she took the lead on Doctor Midnight, Obsidian, and Stargirl. And that was new for us.”

Guggenheim noted, ”I think we felt a certain amount of leeway. It also depends upon the costume. I think Stargirl's costume is just so iconic but also so easily adaptable. It's a different kind of costume than say Doctor Midnight or Obsidian where you might need to take a bit more license to translate it to live action.”

This week’s episode also is notable because it features a scene where Martin Stein, while undercover, has to sing a song – allowing Victor Garber to show off his real life, Broadway-honed skills.

Explained Guggenheim, “You know, it's really funny. The way that came about is that we had Greg [Berlanti] in and we were pitching to him that the Legends infiltrate this cabaret in Nazi-occupied Paris and he's like, ‘Well, you've got to have Victor sing,’ and I jokingly shot back to him, ‘What, like he sings ‘Edelweiss’?’ and he's like ‘Yes, do that!’ That's what we ended up doing. We love Victor. We love it when he sings. Greg and I obviously got the chance to do a lot of that on Eli Stone. In fact, the process of getting Victor on tape for the song was very similar to our process with Eli. We even had Blake Neely, the composer on Eli Stone, and the composer on Legends and Arrow and Flash and Supergirl, fly up to Vancouver and work with Victor on the actual record. That was, like, one of, I think, one of our all time favorite scenes. Such a joy to see Victor sing. I think Victor would tell you, it'd been a while since he'd sung on camera. He's like, ‘Wow, I've got to remember how to do this again!’”

DC's Legends of Tomorrow: "The Justice Society of America" airs Thursday, October 20th on the CW.
