Apple showed off updates of some of it products today, giving some context to earlier leaks about a new MacBook Pro with an OLED strip above the keyboard. Here's all the cool stuff that came out of today's Apple event.
The flagship MacBook has finally gotten an update, with all sorts of new features that almost make up for the long period since Apple introduced a new revision. Both a new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro were introduced.
Perhaps the biggest and easily most touted feature is the new Touch Bar. Both the Touch Bar enabled 15-inch and 13-inch MacBook Pro do away with function keys, replacing the real estate with a multi-touch Retina display with all the features of the function keys, and a ton more.
For example, the MacBook Pro can now be unlocked with your fingerprint, just the same as your iPhone, and the buttons on the Touch Bar will adapt depending on what software you're using. Things like adjusting brightness and volume are still there, and holding the function key on the keyboard brings up function keys on the Touch Bar. Apple took a sizable chunk of its MacBook Pro presentation to show off the new feature, which honestly looks pretty awesome.
Previous MacBook Pro models with Retina display run on Intel's Haswell CPU. The new MacBook Pro models are available with Intel's latest Skylake architecture, bringing them up to speed with basically every other high-end PC on the market. The 15-inch model can be configured with up to 4GB of video RAM with an AMD Polaris GPU, while both the 15-inch and 13-inch are otherwise powered by the CPU's onboard graphics.
The new MacBook Pro comes in 3 configurations: 13-inch with Function Keys, 13-inch, and 15-inch. Only the 13-inch with Function Keys lacks the new Touch Bar, which you could probably have guessed from its name. The base model MacBook Pro starts at $1499 while the base 15-inch model starts at $2399.
Fully tricked out, with the best available processor, 4GB GPU, and 2TB SSD, the 15-inch MacBook Pro is an astonishing $4,299 USD.
New AppleTV announcements were made early in the presentation. Maybe the biggest announcement coming with the reveal Minecraft will be coming to AppleTV, but it also showed off its replacement for the Video app, simply titled TV.
The TV app consolidates all of your video apps into one, meaning you can just open TV on your iPhone, iPad, or AppleTV and see all your video content. It also has a single sign-in feature, so you won't need to sign into every single app individually.
There was no sign of the reported 5K iMac line. In fact, Apple dedicated the lion's share of its presentation to showing off the Touch Bar functionality and how it will help graphic artists, musicians, and film makers work more efficiently.
