Set visits sound like one of the most glamorous things you can do as an entertainment reporter. You get to interview the people starring in and making a TV show or movie, visit the locations that play a key role in that finished product and see that the saying "it takes a village" actually is pretty accurate when you meet the many, many, many people responsible for making that project become a reality.
But as incredible as set visits are, they also tend to be very long days. Oftentimes you're visiting a working production, which means actors are busy filming and directors are busy directing, and can only come talk when scenes are being reset or when they wrap for a day. That means there's often a lot of downtime -- which could be spent reflecting on what you're observing, but I decided to mix things up a bit on my recent trip to Vancouver.
The thing about Vancouver is that so many of your favorite TV shows shoot there. In September I went up to visit four of them over the course of three days: returning favorites The Magicians and The Man in the High Castle, and new series Timeless and Imaginary Mary. It's hard to truly convey the behind-the-scenes experience with words, so I figured I could show it in the most fun way I knew how: through the Pokemon I caught in Pokemon Go during all that downtime. Here's a look behind the curtain at those sets, as well as a peek at the Pokemon populating them.
The Man in the High Castle: Season 2 is premiering in December, and they were actually toward the end of filming the finale when we arrived on set. Unlike the other shows I visited, this one was shooting out on location at an old mental hospital that's doubled for a number of locations in the first and second seasons of the Amazon series. The Man in the High Castle explores an alternate reality where the Nazis and Japanese won World War II, and it was definitely surreal walking around and seeing soldiers wearing uniforms usually relegated to history books.
The Magicians was one of my favorite new shows in 2016, and we got to visit some familiar sets from Season 1 that can be seen in the photos below. This was another very top secret set given the fact that they're pretty deep into Season 2 already and Season 1 ended on a major cliffhanger, but it was great to get to explore Julia's apartment and, to a lesser extent, the Physical Kids cottage. Fittingly, there were a whole lot of psychic Pokemon up in here.
Timeless is a new drama at NBC, and the series is still in the early episodes of Season 1. The new sci-fi drama sees a trio of experts tasked with chasing a criminal through the eras after he steals a time machine for a seemingly nefarious purpose. When we were there for episode 6, the core trio -- Abigail Spencer's Lucy, Matt Lanter's Wyatt and Malcolm Barrett's Rufus -- had chased Goran Visnjic's Garcia Flynn back to the Watergate era, so that day was filled with a whole lot of Nixon.
Imaginary Mary is a new family show on ABC with a big twist: Jenna Elfman's character Alice, a successful sports publicist, has an imaginary friend named Mary who decides to reenter her life when Alice starts dating a single dad with three young children. Much of this series was being kept top secret as it's premiering in 2017, so unfortunately this Pokemon Go set tour is pretty short. Keep an eye out in the new year for when I can share more cool details about that show!
Stay tuned for our full coverage of all of these shows in the coming months! Timeless premieres on NBC on October 3rd, while The Man in the High Castle: Season 2 will premiere on Amazon on December 16th, and The Magicians and Imaginary Mary will hit your TV screens in early 2017.
