Where's Patty?
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
To call The Americans characters multi-faceted seems to be underselling to an incredible degree at this point. We found out the full extent of what was planned for Don and Young Hee here and it was brutal – as Elizabeth first delivered the bombshell that “Patty” was pregnant, and then was… killed off! But we never doubted how much this pained Elizabeth, as the Jennings were told there was no other option.
I loved seeing Gabriel actually on a mission for once, and the way we realized the stranger posing as “Mom” was actually the computer expert Tatiana needed was awesome – another cool way The Americans weaves its characters together even when we never see them onscreen together.
The past isn’t forgotten on this show either. Stan brought up Amador’s death to Oleg (not the first time he’s been mentioned this season) in a great scene that had Stan telling Oleg about the plan to turn him – revealing he just didn’t have the heart to do it.
It’s interesting to see Elizabeth keep speaking to Pastor Tim so much. He’s ultimately turned out to be a kind, sympathetic person and so, despite herself, she’s opening up to him a bit – even while keeping herself on guard and not completely succumbing in the way Philip ended up going all in with EST.
The tension in that dinner scene was incredible. Once Stan showed up, it felt like everything could go bad very quickly (and Henry innocently inviting him in shows the danger of keeping Henry out of the loop – even though there are many reasons telling him could be bad too). But it felt right that for now, nothing huge happened – Tim didn’t freak out hearing Stan was FBI and, if anything, Stan seemed the one more put out by the hippie, no nukes pastor. But you never know how this encounter could come back later….
Case in point, this episode bringing Betty back into the mix! Betty was the old woman Elizabeth had to kill in last year’s standout episode “Do Mail Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?” That encounter was so emotional and powerful, it could have existed on its own – but as it turned out, Betty’s death was a big clue for Stan and Aderholt, leading them one step closer to Philip and Elizabeth.
As for that closing scene, well, damn… First off, even before the would-be mugging, this was an important scene. Paige coming to Elizabeth with the information Matthew gave her about Stan was a big moment, showing Paige is becoming more and more of a spy every day. But who knows how she’ll react after what happened next and seeing her mom freaking stab a guy in the neck in front of her. The second the mugging began, you knew it was going in this direction and it was a simultaneously thrilling and dreadful feeling. The Jennings have so far managed to keep the whole “Sometimes we murder people” thing away from Paige, but now that genie is out of the bottle too. As always, I can’t wait to see what happens next.
The Verdict
What an incredible season this is! The Americans – which just got renewed for two final seasons (rejoice!) – has been delivering week after week this year, and “Dinner for Seven” was no exception. Everything is hanging on by a thread now, with the life Philip and Elizabeth have created in jeopardy from Tim, Stan and many other outside forces. Once more, we saw just how far they had to go here, as Young Hee and Don’s lives as they know them have likely been destroyed, in order for the Jennings to complete a mission – since it seems unlikely Young Hee won’t soon learn “Patty” is dead and things will unravel from there.
Meanwhile, Paige seeing Elizabeth kill for the first time is another huge threshold crossed that could just as easily send Paige away from them as it could, perhaps, bring them closer together.
