Wrestling Wrap Up: AJ Styles Attacks John Cena

Plus, Cena gets in trouble with PBR, Ricochet vs. Ospreay draws the wrath of Vader, Sasha Banks cleared to compete and more.

I suppose an honest question for our day and age in pro-wrestling is "Should we consider it a heel turn if most everyone unabashedly loves what a wrestler did?"

Like, what truly constitutes a heel now? Is it a cheap shot? Because that's really what we're talking about with AJ Styles laying out Cena on RAW. An unexpected attack? Well, going by those rules, Titus is a heel for cheap shotting Rusev. He just came out and punched the dude in the mouth.

Because in the good ol' USA we do our talking with our fists and the last thing you want to be called is a "Blowhard" (seriously, that's the insult Titus hurled to get a pop before he popped Rusev in the face because we're living in a Dick Tracy comic strip from the '30s). Anyhow, I just wanted to point out the weird split there. Maybe if Styles had screamed "In America, we fight!" he'd have come off more like a hero.

I guess my point here is, when AJ stepped into the ring with Cena, there was an awesome back-and-forth chant. Spilt between the two guys. Who were, then, both babyfaces. That split chant will STILL happen after this "turn."

If you're really looking for things to complain about, regarding AJ's swerve, it could be along the lines of "Well, why didn't he do this with Roman? If he'd fully aligned with the Club, he could be champ now." Well, I think the idea is that he had to fail on his own. Not just with Roman, but with Owens last week. So now he's gone back on his decision to leave the Club behind. So it works for me.

And if you really want to get chewy, you can lament the probably inevitable fact that Styles will lose to Cena. Still though, I'd like to put forth that... maybe he won't? Maybe this new returning Cena, who may not have that much more time in the ring going forward, is finally ready to push guys up and over. I mean, he was willing to with Daniel Bryan a few years back and SummerSlam. So maybe this feud with Cena doesn't spell the end of Styles. It didn't for Kevin Owens.

Again though, that's getting way ahead of ourselves. As it stands, WWE is keeping Styles in the big picture. He's facing Cena now. Probably for multiple PPVs. It could even extend to SummerSlam. This is big news. And I am feverishly looking forward to these matches. OF WHICH, Styles will probably win one. Or two. And the Club may even capture the tag belts. Keep in mind, Styles doesn't have many miles left in the tank either. He can rise up, but he's also got fewer days ahead than behind.

Speaking of tag belts though - quick now - DO. NOT. BREAK. UP. NEW. DAY.

I know there's a brand split coming once SmackDown goes live (oh yeah, by the way SmackDown will start airing live on Tuesdays in a few weeks and I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN TO DO THE WRAP UP NOW) even though they're not calling it that exactly. Just "unique rosters" for both shows. Anyhow, I know New Day segments can go on too long, and can fall flat occasionally, but the good outweighs the sluggish here. Think of how much they love memes and the referencing of memes! Think of the memes!

Anyhow, back to Styles. Definitely the highlight of a very tepid RAW. Especially the part where Styles' entire beatdown of Cena played out like the exact opposite of the Rollins/Reigns segment from the hour beforehand, when Rollins kept running toward the ring but never slid inside. Lame fake out after fake out.

Well here, with AJ, he kept rushing back in to dish out more punches. It actually felt very reactionary to how flat the Roman segment went. Like, it was changed on the fly and created to "make up for" the dud from before.

And I know there's a number of you who were phantom booking Balor coming on RAW and moving up to the main roster and becoming the new Club leader, but there were never any murmurs about that; no rumors. He's solidly still in NXT and is set to become that promotion's first two-time champ come next TakeOver. The absolute last I heard on the matter was that Finn was good in NXT until next WrestleMania season. But that's just me. I don't hear much. Or pay attention all that well. Or shower enough.
