After a lacklustre second season, the third run of True Detective is unlikely to make it past the starting blocks.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO's new programming chief, Casey Bloys has his sights set on other projects.
Citing as-yet unnamed "HBO sources," the report claims that "a new project from creator Nic Pizzolatto is more likely" than a third season of the criminal drama. Regardless, "the fate of True Detective now fall[s] to [Bloys.]"
Bloys shifted from his previous role as head of comedy to replace Michael Lombardo as programming president. Lombardo had served HBO for over 30 years.
The decision to put HBO's eggs in other show baskets could be in part a reaction to Season Two's leaden reception. While Season One dazzled with stellar performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the second run was hampered by a rushed production time.
Lombardo has previously admitted that he "set up" True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto to fail, saying that the second season forced Pizzolatto to "reinvent the wheel."
