No Man's Sky Creator on Meeting Elon Musk, Turning Down Kanye

"This game has put me in one weird situation after another."

Hello Games' ambitious space sim No Man's Sky has grabbed the attention of many high-profile figures, so many in fact that studio founder Sean Murray had to turn down an appointment with Kanye West.

On the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, Murray recounted the crazy situation at E3 2015, during which he simply couldn't squeeze the hip-hop icon into is busy schedule, thanks to previously-scheduled meetings with Steven Spielberg and Elon Musk.

"Kanye was at E3 that year and we got a message that he wanted to see the game and we weren’t actually on the show floor at E3," he said. "So we were like, 'We’re not on the show floor and we’ve got Elon Musk to meet and Steven Spielberg so we can’t take that Kanye meeting,'" Murray added, laughing. "It was one of my favorite things. So yeah, that was a weird day... This game has put me in one weird situation after another."

The No Man's Sky creator also shared what it was like meeting with Elon Musk and having the opportunity to tour SpaceX. "It was so cool. Amazing. It's an amazing place," he said of the tour, confessing he's "a big fan of his" and was unsure what they would talk about. However, once the conversation got rolling, the two chatted for quite a while.

"We talked about loads of stuff. We just talked about normal things. I mean, obviously, he's a normal person. We talked about laptops and stuff like that," he said with a chuckle. "He's an incredibly nice guy and obviously super, super smart."

They also discussed artificial intelligence and Musk's work on self-driving cars. "He's fascinating," Murray added. "He has kind of a way of talking that you're not... like he's obviously thinking as much as he's talking. So we would keep waiting for him to just like ask us to leave and we ended up staying there. He had other meetings that were queuing up waiting for him... but we just stayed and chatted. He's really, really good to chat to."
