A television series based on Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles books has picked up steam, as the rights to the franchise have been optioned by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.
The rights to 11 of Rice's popular vampire novels are part of the deal, which includes Christopher Rice, the son of Anne Rice, as writer and executive producer. Anne Rice, as well as Anonymous Content's David Kanter and Steve Golin are also on board as fellow executive producers.
"In this unique golden age of television, I couldn't ask for a finer or more passionate team to help bring my beloved vampire hero, Lestat, alive in a series of the highest quality.," Anne Rice said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
Rice regained the screen rights to the franchise last year, announcing her intent to create an ongoing TV series in the same vein as Game of Thrones. The Vampire Lestat is intended as the starting point for the show's plot, according to Rice at the time, who also said she and her son are aiming to create "an open ended series." IGN also spoke to producer Alex Kurtzman, who was attached to the Vampire Chronicles adaptation when it was a film project at Universal Pictures, about the adaptation.
Paramount TV and Anonymous Content were jointly responsible for the recent Netflix hit 13 Reasons Why, which IGN gave a 9.2 in our review.
