Super Mario Run Nears 150 Million Downloads, but Fire Emblem is More Profitable

Microtransactions strike again.

Super Mario Run is nearing 150 million downloads combined on iOS and Android, however it's not making as much money as Fire Emblem Heroes.

This news comes via the Wall Street Journal's technology reporter in Tokyo, Takashi Mochizuki, on Twitter:

Super Mario Run is a free download, however it costs money if you want to progress past the first three levels and the boss. The level unlock for Mario is a one time payment of $10, whereas Fire Emblem Heroes has microtransactions. You can buy Orbs to unlock new heroes, with the most expensive pack costing $75.

Last month, Nintendo said Super Mario Run didn't meet the company's expectations.

Nintendo's smart device games were one of several encouraging parts of its latest financial statements, more than quadrupling the amount of money made year-on-year.

In IGN's review of Fire Emblem Heroes, we said it's "a lighter but still engaging representation of the beloved tactical RPG series' signature combat." In our review of Super Mario Run, we said it's "a stylish, addictive platformer with strong hooks."
