Captain America Director to Helm Fourth Narnia Movie

The Chronic(what)cles of Narnia continue.

Joe Johnston, The Rocketeer and Captain America: The First Avenger director, will helm The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair.

IGN can confirm that Johnston will direct the film, which is being produced by TriStar Pictures, The Mark Gordon Company, The C.S. Lewis Company, and Entertainment One.

C.S. Lewis' original The Silver Chair novel focuses on Eustace Scrubb, the cousin to the Pevensie children who starred in the first three Chronicles of Narnia films. Scrubb is sent on a journey to save the child of Prince Caspian, who debuted in the second Chronicles of Narnia film in 2008.

Life of Pi and Finding Neverland screenwriter David Magee is adapting The Silver Chair, while Mark Gordon, C.S. Lewis' stepson Douglas Gresham, Vincent Sieber, and Melvin Adams are on as producers.

"Joe is a wonderful storyteller who is equally at home in the biggest franchises and the most intimate character pieces.  Because C. S. Lewis’s story is iconic and epic but also tender, personal and emotional, he’s the perfect choice to bring The Silver Chair to the screen," Gordon said.

Lewis' seven-novel series was first adapted for film with 2005's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, followed by 2008's Prince Caspian, and then 2010's The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Disney distributed the first two films in the franchise, while 20th Century Fox distributed the third before it was announced last year that Sony would distribute the fourth Narnia film. Combined, the first three films have made nearly $1.6 billion worldwide at the box office.

Gordon discussed last year how The Silver Chair would serve as a fresh start for the franchise.

Variety first reported Johnston's attachment to the film.
