This week Marvel Comics is lifting the veil on the new X-Men books that are launching Spring 2017 under the ResurrXion banner, ushering in new, more positive outlook for the beleaguered mutants after their war with the Inhumans.
We already know the titles that will encompass the new X-Men line thanks to the ResurrXion teaser campaign last month, but now we’re learning the creators involved, the rosters of the team books, and the concept of each book.

Synopsis: There's a new Weapon X program in town and it's bigger and badder than ever, so Old Man Logan assembles a team full of big and bad people to take them on, including Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Domino, and Warpath. Yup, both heroes and villains going on black-ops missions together to stop Weapon X from achieving their new goal: eradicating mutantkind.
"The powers and abilities of this new Weapon X threat are so terrifying that you need both heroes and villains teaming up to handle it. So get ready for a blockbuster thriller of a comic book with a brutal group of heroes and anti-heroes stretched to their limits in a battle for the survival of mutantkind. And of course, we’re going to have tons of fun as our heroes drive each other crazy along the way," Pak said.
Pak and Land are re-teaming after their Phoenix: Endsong mini-series in 2005.

Synopsis: Jean Grey takes center stage in her first-ever solo comic series. The book focuses around a premonition she receives showing the return of the Phoenix Force and how she embarks on a journey to help her prepare for it. This is the young, time-displaced Jean Grey who was brought to the present and has been trapped there for years, so she doesn't have the experience or power of the Jean Grey we saw embody the Phoenix. Considering that that Jean was only able to contain it by killing herself, this more nubile Jean has a lot of work cut out for her.
“It’s a sort of trials of Hercules story. Jean gets a premonition of sorts. She’s told the Phoenix is back in play and that the Earth is doomed unless Jean Grey can step up,” Hopeless said. “Unfortunately, the Jean Grey we have is a wildly unprepared teenager. Our Jean needs to level up in a hurry. She needs to step into those huge shoes and become the full grown badass we all know she will eventually. So… she straps in and heads out to get some life experience.”
Jean will be the focus of the book but the other X-Men Blue team (more on them below) will make up her supporting cast. The story will see her traveling to meet (and fight) different Marvel heroes and villains, plus we can expect previous (and future) Phoenix hosts to play a part. Quentin Quire, Rachel Grey, Hope Summers, and the remaining Phoenix Five (Emma Frost, Colossus, Namor and Magik) are all possibilities.

Synopsis: Not every mutant is cut out to save the day as a superhero, and so original Generation X member Jubilee leads a group of "lovable losers" who have powers and/or personalities that either make them a liability or aren't cut out for combat missions. Jubilee's group of mutant students includes Bling, Eye Boy, Quentin Quire, Nature Girl, Benjamin Deeds, and a new character named Nathaniel Carver. Certainly not the squad you'd send to take down Apocalypse or the Juggernaut. Fans of the original Generation X back in the '90s can expect to see some old faces return, like Chamber and Husk, but they won't be central to the book.
The Xavier Institute will see a restructuring, explained by colorist-turned-writer Strain: "Now in Central Park, the rechristened Xavier Institute has taken this move as an opportunity to re-evaluate their students, internally dividing the student body into three classes: The Next Generation of X-Men, the Next Generation of Ambassadors, and the Next Generation of… well, lovable losers. These are our Gen Xers. And they include mutants with benign powers, mutants who are considered liabilities during missions and/or battles, and mutants with personalities ill-fitting of an ambassador. They’re basically all mutants who just don’t seem to fit in anywhere — including the very school where they were promised they would fit in."

Synopsis: This series stars the adult version of Iceman (his younger, time-displaced self is a member of X-Men Blue), who is going out on his own adventures. Series editor Daniel Ketchum pitched the book’s concept, saying “When Iceman’s not bringing up the next generation of X-Men at the Xavier School, he’ll be spanning the globe, icing himself up and taking down the biggest, baddest villains the Marvel U has to offer.”
Iceman is an Omega-level mutant, and though he’s had some truly impressive displays of power over the years, he’s generally not regarded as a big threat on the battlefield. That’s going to change. With some help from his younger self, Iceman finally gained the courage to come out of the closet as gay, and with that newfound understanding of himself, Grace teased, “With this series, you’ll see how much knowing yourself and understanding yourself helps inform the scope of your abilities, both as a human being and also as a superhero. We are gonna play with it to be sure, because this guy is an Omega Level mutant at the end of the day.”

Synopsis: The five original X-Men -- Jean Grey, Cyclops, Iceman, Beast and Angel -- are teaming back up again in the wake of Inhumans vs. X-Men. Jean Grey will step up as team leader as the group strives to protect both mutants and mankind as superheroes. The twist? With Professor X dead, their once-greatest enemy Magneto will be their mentor.
These original X-Men have been stuck in the present for some time now, causing untold damage to the timeline. That problem will once again be at the forefront of the book.
As for the team’s first threat -- aside from having Magneto give them advice -- Bunn hinted that they will first face off against what he considers one of “the best supervillain duos of all time.”

Synopsis: Kitty Pryde will lead the X-Men for the first time in a new series featuring Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Old Man Logan, and Rachel Grey sporting a new costume and superhero name, Prestige. Kitty will be returning from her adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy to help the X-Men rebound after their war with the Inhumans. The first big threat they will face will be a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with members that Guggenheim says ought to surprise readers.
