This new year has the potential to be a great one at the movies. There are long-awaited sequels (xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, Blade Runner 2049, T2: Trainspotting) and new installments in long-running franchises (Transformers: The Last Knight, Star Wars: Episode VIII, The Fate of the Furious) peppered throughout.
Not only will 2017 bring us the superhero team-up many thought would never happen (Justice League), but it also offers a goodbye to an old friend (Logan) and maybe an entire franchise (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter).
Fans of Stephen King will find themselves over the moon as not one, but two, high-profile adaptations arrive in the second half of 2017 (The Dark Tower, It) and several other classic monsters (The Mummy, Kong: Skull Island) will be resurrected during the year.
Below you will find a list of 42 of the biggest movies scheduled for release, but there is so much more coming as well. Check it out, and let us know what you plan on seeing.
Release Date: Jan. 6 (US) , Jan. 13 (UK), Dec. 1, 2016 (AU)
Every few years since 2003 we have gotten a new entry in the Underworld franchise and as the previous movies (this is number five) and our general knowledge of horror have made clear, Vampires and Lycans don't see eye-to-eye on a whole lot of stuff. That said, neither group has much love for Kate Beckinsale's Selene who is still out and about doing everything she can to end the war between the two groups. Anna Foerster directs the movie which features Theo James and Charles Dance as well. Both actors also appeared in Underworld: Awakening, the entry immediately preceding this one.
Release Date: Jan. 20 (US, UK), Jan. 19 (AU)
M. Night Shyamalan is back in the writer/director's chair (or is it chairs?) for a new movie featuring everyone's favorite First Class version of Professor X, James McAvoy. The actor plays Kevin, a man with no fewer than 23 different personalities, (at least) one of which has kidnapped three teenage girls. Kevin also hints at another personality, one which might be able to take control of all the rest. As a Shyamalan movie, whether turns out to be more The Sixth Sense or The Lady in the Water, expect lots of twists, turns, and unexpected surprises… especially right before the end credits roll.
Release Date: Jan. 20 (US), Jan. 19 (UK, AU)
Vin Diesel starred in the original xXx way back in 2002. He then didn’t appear in its sequel, xXx: State of the Union, in 2005 when Ice Cube became our new Triple X. As the title of this third entry indicates (if you know that Diesel plays Xander Cage in the franchise), Diesel is back for this 2017 outing, returning to the character 15 years later. His mission? Something to do with saving the world, although we prefer the description Samuel L. Jackson (who did appear in both the original and sequel) gives in the trailer which essentially amounts to beat the bad guys and look awesome. DJ Caruso directs.
Release Date: Jan. 27 (US), Feb. 3 (UK), Jan. 26 (AU)
Director Paul W.S. Anderson says that this is going to be the final movie in the series. Fans of genre film however will point out that "The Final Chapter" has been used before in a movie's title and that a year later there was another entry in that franchise. But whether or not this is the last Resident Evil movie, we can tell you that Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Eoin Macken, and William Levy all appear in the film which promises to take Alice back to Raccoon City and The Hive. The movie has made it clear that there will be answers this time out about Umbrella's real mission and what's going on with Alice. One wonders though whether those answers will simply lead to more questions.
Release Date: Feb. 3 (US, UK), Mar. 16 (AU)
We listed this movie in our 2016 year end preview as it was at one point scheduled to open last October, but what we said about it at that point remains true -- while the last movie in the Ring horror franchise, The Ring 2, appeared in 2005 and that may have led some to conclude that the series was done, Rings is here to prove them wrong. After all, just like the killers they feature, no good horror franchise stays dead. F. Javier Gutierrez is directing the movie, the plot of which involves a woman who becomes concerned when her boyfriend learns about a mysterious videotape that kills those who watch it. Matilda Lutz, Aimee Teegarden, Johnny Galecki, and Alex Roe star.
Release Date: Feb. 3 (US), Feb. 10 (UK), TBD (AU)
Originally slated to open last summer, this Peter Chelsom-directed film follows 16-year old Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield), the first human born on Mars, as he visits Earth for the first time in his life. Tomorrowland's Britt Robertson plays street smart Tulsa, who joins him on his journey to discover how he came to be. Gary Oldman, Carla Gugino, and BD Wong co-star.
Release Date: Feb. 10 (US), Feb. 17 (UK), TBA (AU)
You didn't ever really think that John Wick was going to stay retired did you? There was no chance of that, not when the box office numbers and critical reception were so good the last time he came out of retirement. And so, Keanu Reeves is suiting up as the assassin once more, and this time he's heading to Rome. Expect the city to experience a lot of blood and death and a decent amount of mayhem. The movie is being helmed by Chad Stahelski and also features Common, Ian McShane, Ruby Rose, Riccardo Scamarcio, John Leguizamo, and Laurence Fishburne. Yup, Laurence Fishburne. Which color pill did you take again?
Release Date: Feb. 10 (US, UK), Mar. 30 (AU)
The LEGO Movie, perhaps improbably, took a children's toy and connected all the pieces of various shapes and sizes into an outstanding and complex structure, turning the toy into a movie loved by kids and adults alike. Now, Will Arnett is back as the voice of Batman and he's being joined by Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker (presumably without a "damaged" tattoo). Chris McKay directs. How exactly this all may fit into the LEGO universe created for the first film remains to be seen, but we certainly hope that it will be just as clever and funny.
Release Date: Feb. 17 (US, UK), TBA (AU)
Zhang Yimou directs Matt Damon in this historical fantasy tale of "an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure." The first trailers for the movie offer an impressive set of visuals even if they don't make the evil monsters on the far side of the wall all that clear (we would describe them as almost lizard-like). Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, and Willem Dafoe also star. This is Yimou's first English-language production, but the director has garnered acclaim for other work including Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
Release Date: Feb. 24 (US), Mar. 17 (UK), TBA (AU)
Jordan Peele may be best known for his work in comedy, but he is the man writing and directing this movie which is described as a "speculative thriller." Produced by Jason Blum, the film follows the tale of a woman, Rose (Allison Williams), bringing her boyfriend, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), to meet her parents (Catherine Keener and Bradley Whitford). Is the tension that Chris feels during the weekend based upon the parents' concerns over the interracial nature of the relationship or, perhaps, is there something potentially more sinister at work? The trailer definitely indicates the latter, even if it doesn't provide all the details.
