IGN's Nominees for Best Visual Effects Movie of 2016

Here are IGN's nominees for Best Visual Effects of 2016. We'll announce our winner in January, but our opinion isn't the only one that matters - cast your vote in the poll below to help decide the IGN People's Choice winner!

From IGN's Review: Arrival is a language lesson masquerading as a blockbuster, though much more entertaining than that sounds. The film features shades of Interstellar, Contact and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but never feels derivative. Rather it’s smart, sophisticated sci-fi that that asks BIG questions, and does a pretty good job of answering them.

From IGN's Review: Visually, Doctor Strange is stunning. Director Scott Derrickson does a great job of portraying the mind- and world-bending imagery here. There are some incredibly outrageous, surreal moments here that are true standouts. Marvel comics fans will also be pleased to see that the original Doctor Strange art by the character’s co-creator, Steve Ditko, is not forgotten and paid proper respect, and there are some wild other-dimensional sequences clearly influenced by the iconic Marvel artist’s 1960s depiction of Strange’s adventures.

From IGN's Review: The fantastic CGI used to create key characters like Bagheera the panther, Baloo the bear, Raksha the wolf, Shere Khan and King Louie the orangutan was only half the battle. It was clear from The Jungle Book's trailers that all of these computer-generated creatures looked spectacularly real, but their striking visual effects would mean nothing if they weren't developed into full characters. Fortunately Justin Marks' screenplay brings real depth to the important creatures in Mowgli's life.

From IGN's Review: The movie wouldn't work without its titular dragon, and Elliot is the best casting of all. Thanks to Weta's visual effects, Elliot is a perfectly believable part of the world. The decision to make him furry makes it easy to view the character as the puppy in a children's book significant to Pete's story, but director David Lowery also doesn't hold back from making Elliot scary.

From IGN's Review: Some dodgy digital face recreations aside, the effects here are excellent, as we’ve come to expect from ILM. K-2S0 looks so good, it’s easy to forget he’s a CGI character, and the film’s big X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter space battle is mind-boggling. It’s easy to see why George Lucas is said to have loved Rogue One, as it so expertly recreates the world of his original Star Wars film, while using modern technology to deliver even more amazing visuals.

From IGN's Review: The film excels in not just the inventive visuals and action -- which are guided by the sure hand of franchise newcomer (and Fast and the Furious vet) director Justin Lin -- but also in terms of character, humor and emotional impact.
