Logan to Reportedly Feature Major X-Men Universe Cameo

Logan will hit theaters on March 3, 2017.

Potential spoilers for Logan continue below, so read on at your own risk.

If a new report is to be believed, the Merc with a Mouth could be making an appearance in 2017's Logan, the forthcoming Wolverine film starring Hugh Jackman.

TheWrap reports Ryan Reynolds has filmed a scene as Deadpool that will appear in Logan. According to the site, the scene will likely end up as a post-credits tag. Deadpool 2 director David Leitch reportedly directed the Deadpool scene for the film. IGN has reached out to Fox for comment.

Fox's 2016 hit firmly established Deadpool as part of the studio's X-Men universe, though Reynolds' character never actually encountered any of the existing characters in the franchise. He picks up X-Men sidekicks Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and has several fourth wall-breaking scenes, including one where he asks if the "Professor" Colossus mentions is "McAvoy or Stewart."

The Tim Miller-directed film calls out Jackman's Wolverine multiple times; first at the beginning when Deadpool says, "Whose balls did I have to fondle to get my own movie? ... I'm not going to name names, but it rhymes with Polverine," and later when Vanessa pulls off Deadpool's mask to find a photo of Jackman's Wolverine stapled to his face.

Of course, Deadpool's history in Wolverine films stretches farther back than that. Reynolds' take on the character first appeared in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and at the time was thought to launch a Deadpool solo film (something Reynolds had been trying to make since 2003 but never got off the ground).

Fast forward seven years, and 2016's Deadpool leaves the X-Men Origins take on the character in the rearview mirror. Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly Radio prior to the film's release the "Deadpool appearing in [X-Men Origins: Wolverine] is not the Deadpool we are representing in this film, in any way shape or form." Still, it's a bit of a perfect circle to have Reynolds' take on the character once again appear in a Jackman X-Men movie, even if just for one scene.

Given the success of Deadpool, it makes perfect sense that Fox would support connecting Reynolds' side series back to the core X-Men franchise. Deadpool was a massive success when it was released in early 2016, earning $363 million domestic ($783 million worldwide) off a supposedly risky concept made on a modest $58 million budget.

Its box office prowess made it the most successful X-Men movie to date, and it was significantly more successful than either of the two previous Wolverine spinoffs. (Origins: Wolverine made $180 million domestic/$373 million worldwide and 2013's The Wolverine made $132 million domestic/$414 million worldwide.)

Based on the Mark Millar and Steve McNiven comic "Old Man Logan," the forthcoming Wolverine film is set in the future in 2024. It follows an older Logan who is caring for an ailing Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) when they come across a mysterious girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) who has the same powers as Wolverine. Director James Mangold recently said the goal of Logan was to make "something human."

Logan will hit theaters on March 3, 2017, while Deadpool 2 is slated for a March 2, 2018 release date.
