The following are some tips to help you get EXP and level up more efficiently.

EditRest When and Where it Matters

Resting is your key way of leveling up in this game, but where you rest and when is most important. Camp sites are great for just before a boss, but they don't reap the rewards of staying at a hotel, especially if you have a lot of experience stored up. There are two hotels that provide huge boosts to experience:

  • The Quayside Cradle - Galdin Quay: This hotel gives you a x2 EXP multiplier upon cashing in your experience for the night. It costs 10,000 Gil to stay there.
  • Leville Royal Suit - Altissia: This hotel gives you a massive x3 multiplier to your EXP upon cashing it in for the night and costs 30,000 Gil to stay. There are two clerks in the hotel and you want to talk to the one further from the entrance. You can return to Altissia by going to any hotel/motel/caravan in the game and summoning Umbra to return to Altissia through him.

These two hotels are pricey, so only go there when you have a lot of EXP stored up. The more you have the more worth it it is, making it a great investment towards the end of the game when things get difficult.

Gain EXP is pretty straight forward since just about everything you do in the game rewards it. However, to benefit the most from the previous step, you'll want to store up a lot of EXP, so try taking on bounty hunts, side quests, and the many dungeons in the game.

Dungeons each come with their own mission and they're very rewarding for EXP. Further more, many of the dungeon bosses also have bounty hunts for them, meaning you can return to kill the boss over and over again to gain lots of EXP.

Lastly, food is your friend. There are several dishes around the Eos in places like Altissia's Maagho that will give you large EXP boosts. Check out our Food and Recipes page for all the dishes Ignis can cook up that will give you EXP bonuses.

Have you come across a bunch of Rare Coins and Debased currencies as you've played? Don't sell them! Use them through Elemancy to make EXP boosting spells! These spells require any of the debased or rare types of money you can find as treasures in the game. Upon using them, the caster gets a bonus experience! If you use a fully powered up EXP spell, you can get thousands of more EXP from a single battle!

There are a few recipes in the game and resturants you can go to that will give you bonus experience. Check out our Food and Recipes page for all the different dishes Ignis can cook up. Additionally, go to Altissia to find a dish at the Maagho that will give you a major EXP boost!

The other side of the coin is Ascension and the AP that is required for it. You get AP each time you level up as well as for performing various attacks and doing different things in the game.

Getting these nodes very early into the game will help you rack up a lot of AP as time goes on. The following has the node you'll want as well as the cost of it and any precursor nodes.

  • Exploration
    • Happy Camping (20 AP) - Increase AP gained for making camp.
      • Happier Camping  (48 AP) - Further increases AP gained for making camp. Requires previous node.
    • Roadrunning (32 AP) - Gain AP for long trip in the car.
    • Chocobump (32 AP) - Gain AP for long trips by chocobo.
  • Armiger
    • Armiger Action (48 AP + 24 AP) - Gain AP for conjuring the Armiger
    • Armiger Chain Reaction (48 AP + 24 AP) - Gain AP for executing an Armiger Chain.

A great way to grind for AP can be done after you get the Monster Whistle in Chapter 4. Head to just about anywhere in Leide and find a pack of low-level enemies. What you want to do is warp-strike to kill them in one hit. Doing so will grant you 1 AP per kill. Then, use the Monster Whistle to bring them back so you can rinse and repeat. You can get anywhere from 500 to 1,000 AP an hour doing this.

EditSlow and Steady Wins the Race

There's a very slow, but somewhat effective way to gain a bit of EXP and a lot of AP over time. Once you've completed all of the side quests from Cindy, you'll be able to drive at night without worry of daemons as well as to drive more efficiently. Additionally, you will be able to find even better upgrades at stores in places like Altissia upon completing her quests for more fuel and better fuel efficiency.

What you'll want for this are the perks Roadrunning (32 AP) and Roadlife (99 AP) from the Exploration skilltree. Once you have these and an upgraded car, you can either have Noctis or Ignis drive around Lucis gaining AP. You'll gain 10 EXP and 1 AP every few hundred feet. Once your car can go faster for much longer, you'll be racking in a lot of AP.

Additionally, if you have the Regalia Type-F, you'll have unlimited fuel and can do this without stopping. Start from a location like Lestallum and head south. If you have Noctis drive, you can hold down the accelerator and drive in an ever-looping circuit.

There are a few ways to earn gil that are pretty obvious: bounty hunts, side quests, selling treasure and other items you don't need, and more. However, there is one way to make a lot of gil that you might not know about.

In Altissia, there's a colosseum. At this colosseum you can gamble on monster battles. All you have to do is buy in and then bet as much as you want. However, there's a trick to it. You'll be given a horn that allows you to heal your monsters, but you can also buy horns near the gondola that takes you to the colosseum. Those horns are expensive, but they'll boost things like attack and defence, so they're very useful.

Once you start winning, you'll be able to get some prizes. Prizes like the Great Garula Tusk might seem useless, but you can actually sell them for a lot of gil. Be sure to get a few once you've gotten the other prizes you want.

In Altissia, there's a MHV game by the merchant who exchanges goods for Oracle Ascension Coins. This version of the game costs 10,000 Gil to play, but its rewards are the best in the game. If you get up to 99 treasures, you can cash in for 500,000 Gil!
