Several post-Civil War II comics have strongly hinted that Tony Stark died in his final battle with Captain Marvel. The truth, as it turns out, is a little more complicated than that. Carol did defeat Tony in one-on-one combat, destroying his massive armor and leaving Tony in a severely injured and comatose state.

However, Tony isn't dead. After examining his body, Beast isn't sure exactly what's going on with the fallen Avenger. Beast noted that Tony has apparently been experimenting on his own body for years. This has allowed Tony to survive what should have been certain death, but even the greatest minds in the Marvel U. aren't sure if he'll recover or how his body might evolve when he does.

This actually isn't the first time we've seen Tony Stark play mad scientist with his own body. He's undergone a number of major physical changes over the years, including injecting himself with the Extremis virus. He even grew himself a new, improved set of eyes in Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca's Invincible iron Man run. At this point, Tony may have made himself more machine than man.

For now, readers will have to wait to see what the future holds for Tony Stark. But at least he won't be completely out of the picture in 2017. A digitized A.I. version of Tony is currently helping Riri Williams learn the ropes of being a superhero in the relaunched Invincible Iron Man comic.
