Benjamin Bratt had a small but notable role in Doctor Strange that ended with a rather ambiguous conclusion in a post-credits scene. Is he hoping for a return in Doctor Strange 2, or one of the other Marvel Cinematic Universe films? Bratt thinks there's a good likelihood.
"Let's just say I'm optimistic that it will turn into something. There's been no promise. There's been no real conversation," he told IGN at the 2017 summer TV Critics' Association press tour while promoting his role in FOX's Star.
Doctor Strange's post-credits scene shows Mordo confronting Bratt's character, Jonathan Pangborn, stripping him of his magic and threatening him. It's unclear of Mordo ended up killing Pangborn. When asked how intentionally ambiguous that scene is, Bratt said, "It's ambiguous -- I think on purpose."
In addition to his role on Star, Bratt also stars in the upcoming Shot Caller opposite Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and in Pixar's next animated film, Coco.
"I continue to seek out projects that are going to challenge me in ways no other projects have, but I'm also looking for something that's going to be fun to do," he said. When asked about the pitch to join Strange, even in a small role, Bratt said, "Do you want to fly to London for a day to shoot a Marvel movie with Benedict Cumberbatch? Umm, hell to the yes. That was an easy decision.
"I think they left it, as you said, purposely ambiguous, but my hope is they bring that character, Pangborn, back."
