Bungie's new frontier

Speaking at Gamescom, Bungie community manager David "DeeJ" Dague promised a warm welcome for new players when Destiny 2 launches on PC.

"[This is] a whole new frontier for our community," said Dague. "We've had millions of people join us and go on these great adventures together. This means we can welcome new people and that's what we're all about. It's the first time in a long time we've been on [PC]. We know we've got our work cut out, but we feel really confident in what we've built."

Tell us a story

Destiny 2's imminent console launch seemed a good occasion for anofficial launch trailer, which debuted at Gamecom and showed Bungie's commitment to storytelling. This new video reveals the fate of the Speaker, the ruin of the Last City, and provides further detail on new, sinister big bad Lord Ghaul. Leading the resistance are Destiny's iconic Guardian heroes: the mysterious Warlock Ikora Rey, grim Titan Commander Zavala, andwisecracking fan-favorite Hunter Cayde-6… plus newDead Zone sniper Hawthorne. If this colorful team can't put a dent in the alien hordes, well… let's not think about that.

Anything but dead

Another big reveal came in a detailed look at the European Dead Zone, the first of Destiny 2's four new locations.

Here you'll take on the insect-like Fallen in a series of escalating battles set amidst some (relatively) pleasant forest and lake surroundings. Bungie's DeeJ described it as the biggest destination they'd ever created for Destiny. "It's filled with bad guys, it's filled with mystery, and it's filled with treasure for you to claim."

Under the tutelage of gentlemen sniper Devrim Kay, this new zone not only introduces new gameplay mechanics, but also new modes like solo-player Adventures and Lost Sectors, hidden mini-dungeons with a tough boss to conquer. Check out the full video for a wealth of new info, extensive details on the new loot system, plus further footage of the new Titan Sentinel subclass wielding a mean Captain America–style shield.

Prepare thine eyes

The PC version of Destiny 2 will run in true 4K and even 4K DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) resolutions. If you've got the rig, this is going to be one of the most gorgeous games around. Nowhere is this better showcased than in the above 4K 60FPS excerpt from the Inverted Spire three-man strike, which sees guardians —including the new Hunter — battle the Modular Mind in a spectacular finale. Lower the lighting, crank the res to 4K, and drink in the sumptuous visuals.

Let's get technical

PC fans, time for the good stuff. Bungie and NVIDIA also took the opportunity to delve into the nitty-gritty of a raft of new technical features and enhancements. Chief among these is support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) lighting. Long a feature of high-end digital cinema, HDR is a technology that results in a much richer graphical experience, with more vivid colors, darker blacks, and a bolder, more dynamic visual feel. If you have a monitor that supports it, the eye candy will get a whole lot tastier.

Maniacs with multiple graphics cards will also be able to enjoy official SLI support, boosting performance beyond that of a single GPU. And don't forget to grab the newDestiny 2 game-ready driver, released just in time for last week's PC Beta.

Finally, Bungie also launched anupdated Companion App to help you keep track of your guardian and all their armor, gear, weapons, and quest progress. Be sure to note, you'll need the companion app to join or set up your new Destiny 2 clan when the full game hits PC on October 24th.

Destiny 2 on the cheap

If you've been trying to talk yourself into a graphics card upgrade then Destiny 2's visuals might have you rattling the piggy bank and checking behind sofa cushions. Not to tempt you any further, but NVIDIA just reactivated its GeForce GTX Destiny 2 bundle. If you buy a select GeForce GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti graphics card, pre-built system, or laptop, you'll score a copy of Destiny 2 at PC launch. It's a time-limited deal and only available from certain retailers, so do a little reading first if you're thinking about taking the plunge.

Gamescom transmission ending

Whew, that brings us to the present. Gamescom revealed a lot of exciting new info, and there's more to come as Destiny 2 enters the final countdown for its console launch. It's super cool to see Bungie returning to PC, and in high style. Stay tuned for more, soon.

For a limited time, when you buy an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card, system, or laptop, you’ll get Destiny 2 when it launches on PC.
