James Cameron and Tim Miller have come forward to share new details about the upcoming Terminator reboot, which will be released in theaters on July 26, 2019.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron offered a few hints about the film's story, shedding light on how Arnold Schwarzenegger's character will be handled in the film."The beauty of it is: He's a cyborg," he said, explaining that because the organic component is on the outside, he would appear to age normally.
"There's this idea that flesh sort of sheaths over a metal endo-skeleton. So that would age normally. So, obviously he's one that's been in action and operation for a long time," Cameron said. Last month, Cameron hinted at Schwarzenegger's role in the upcoming film, teasing the possibility of him playing the person whose DNA was used as the basis for the T-800.
Miller, who directed 2016's Deadpool and is on board to helm the new Terminator movie, chimed in to note that he like his sci-fi stories and characters grounded, and discussed how the reboot will be different than what's come before. "They're learning machines," he said of the cyborgs, explaining that Schwarzenegger's character has evolved "emotionally and intellectually."
Unlike Terminator Genisys, which Miller said featured a "slightly gussied-up version of the old Terminator," the director wants to "embrace his age" in the reboot, saying he believes "that's what's going to make it interesting and fresh for the fans." Earlier this week, Schwarzenegger revealed the reboot will ignore Genisys.
Cameron previously said he's interested in potentially creating a trilogy of new Terminator movies, which could serve as a reinvention of the franchise.
The film will feature the return of Linda Hamilton and serve as a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The plan is to set up for a new generation of characters, with Cameron previously saying they're looking for "an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story."
