Marvel Legacy's Big Questions Addressed by Marvel EiC

From that big return to that puzzling numeric code.

Marvel Legacy #1 by Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic and a host of other Marvel artists is here and it’s filled with huge revelations about the Marvel Universe that set up the publisher’s next relaunch. We conducted an email interview with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso about what to make of these big twists and turns (including that big character return they've been teasing).

Warning: this article contains full spoilers for Marvel Legacy #1!

The issue opens with an introduction to the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC, including Odin, Phoenix, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Starbrand, the Ancient One, and Ghost Rider (riding a fiery mammoth). They have banded together to defeat a deranged Celestial and charge into a battle that they assumedly win because the Earth keeps on spinning and because we see the defeated Celestial unearthed by Loki at the end of the issue. In the present, Star Brand attacks Ghost Rider Robbie Reyes under mysterious motivations, and Iron Fist and Doctor Strange are hanging out, so it seems like Aaron is setting up the modern incarnation of that ancient Avengers team.

“The 1,000,000 B.C. Avengers are a colossal idea,” Alonso said when asked if that was the intention. “Look for them to be big players in the coming year.”

Loki was the reason the original team of Avengers first assembled, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he woke the Celestial up and was the reason this new team groups up for the first time, too.

Ghost Rider’s Upgrade

During his fight with Star Brand, Ghost Rider comes out victorious thanks to his use of the Penance Stare. Robbie’s Ghost Rider has never had that power because unlike previous Ghost Riders, he is possessed by the spirit of his evil uncle, Eli, rather than the Spirit of Vengeance. Now that he has a powerful tool used by previous Ghost Riders, what does this mean for the character?

“It means we’ve powered him up,” Alonso said. “Expect Robbie’s profile to expand this year in proportion to his power.”

If Robbie is indeed going to become a member of this new team of Avengers, then he could definitely use the extra oomph.

A Clue to Captain America’s Future

We see Steve Rogers, out of costume, traveling across the US by himself, clearly still dispirited by the events of Secret Empire that saw his reputation tarnished by an elaborate Hydra plot. But the more intriguing Captain America moment came during the scene where Sam Wilson and Thor try to stop a group of Black Ice Berserkers from stealing a crate from a SHIELD warehouse. A different, random crate is smashed open during the brawl, revealing a prototype of Captain America’s shield. We’re not sure what it could mean, and Alonso was happy to let the question remain unanswered.

“Take it as a clue that something is afoot,” he said.

If we’re just rattling off ideas about what it could possibly mean, we’d go with… there’s going to be yet another new Captain America and that will be his shield, Steve Rogers’ shield will get damaged/destroyed and he’ll use that one as a replacement, Hydra Cap escapes from prison and repaints that shield with Hydra colors to use as a weapon against his doppleganger, or the shield belongs to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resident historian named Albert and we’ll get to learn all about his time in school studying to be a history professor and Laura, the girl that got away because Nick Fury recruited him to work in a clandestine branch of library science.

The crate that gets stolen by the final Black Ice Berserker has the number “4-1939” printed on the side. The number is a reference to the month (April) and year Marvel Comics #1 was published, featuring Namor the Submariner, but does it have any significance beyond that?

“No comment,” Alonso told us. Of course that’s what he said!

Keep reading for the big return, Black Panther's new origin, and more.
