A new Men in Black spinoff film is in the works, but there is no plan at the moment for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to return as J and K.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has fast tracked the film for release on May 17, 2019.
The movie already has a script, which comes from Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. Holloway and Marcum have written other movies such as Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight. This currently untitled sequel also has Steven Spielberg on board as an executive producer. What it does not have yet, though is a director or any actors.
There had been talk of a mashup film combining the Men in Black "universe" with the "universe" of the films 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. However, this project seems to have no connection to that previously considered idea. This new movie is expected to build upon the events of the first three Men in Black movies, but only with heretofore unknown characters.
The general premise, a secret cabal of black-suit-clad agents monitoring alien activity and "protecting the Earth from the scum of the universe," remains the same.
The original Men in Black was a huge hit in 1997, bringing in almost $590 million in worldwide box office and helping to cement Smith's status as one of the world's biggest movie stars. It was then followed by two sequels, the most recent of which came out in 2012.
This is not the only reboot news Sony has dropped recently, as it also announced plans to rekindle the Charlie's Angels films, with Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong'o reportedly in talks to star.
