Stephen King's IT Passes Major Box Office Milestone

You'll float too, on a river of money.

The critically acclaimed horror reimagining IT has passed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office.

Warner Bros. announced today Stephen King's latest novel adaption has surpassed that milestone, long having eclipsed The Exorcist's long-held record as the highest-grossing horror film of all time — $441 million.

The Exorcist held the record for 44 years with $441 million made. Of course, that number is unadjusted for inflation, not taking into account the various changes worldwide.

In addition to being the new top-grossing horror film, IT has also broken records for having the biggest opening weekend for the genre in over 30 markets. The film has yet to release in Germany, Italy, and Japan.

The American box office total is now over $272 million, while top foreign markets U.K. and Mexico are at $35 million and $21 million respectively.

Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing and distribution at Warner Bros, praised the cast and crew, saying “Crossing $500 million is rarified air for any film, but for a horror film it is history-making, and we could not be prouder,”.

While we think IT is one of the best Stephen King films ever made the horror blockbuster continues to cause a stir all over the world with clowns losing work and Burger King in Russia even trying to ban the film.

An IT sequel date was recently announced. For more on the sequel, check out our comprehensive overview of everything we know about IT: Chapter 2 thus far, as well as an explanation of how the ending of the first film sets up the sequel.
