Blade Runner 2049's Denis Villeneuve May Direct Cleopatra Film

From a dystopian future to Ancient Egypt?

Denis Villeneuve, director of the upcoming Blade Runner 2049, is in talks to direct a biopic of Cleopatra according to Variety. The film has been gestating at Sony for quite some time, with Villeneuve the latest director rumored to helm the project.

The film is being produced by Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal, based on a book by Stacy Schiff. Angelina Jolie has been attached to the project in the past, but it is unknown if that is still the case. Less-than-kind words from Rudin about Jolie in relation to this film were leaked as part of the Sony hack, which gives a sense of how long this project has been planned. In the past, Paul Greengrass and James Cameron have been linked to the film, but now it appears to be Villeneuve's project.

In addition to Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve has helmed such critically-acclaimed films as Sicario and Arrival, earning a Best Director nomination at the Oscars for the latter. He is currently attached to direct a reboot of Dune, but the plan is for him to develop Cleopatra while he finishes that film.

Villeneuve is one of the hottest directors in Hollywood at the moment, so perhaps he can finally make this film a reality for Sony.
