The Best of Comics at New York Comic-Con 2017

Marvel and DC's biggest comics.

New York Comic-Con kicks off next week, bringing us exciting news for upcoming superhero, sci-fi, and other projects relevant to our interests. With the event almost upon us, we’re previewing the big stuff that we’re most excited to see.

This article will focus on the big comic book stuff we can’t wait to see. Also be sure to check out what we want to see from the world of games, movies, and TV.

The first step of the Marvel Legacy relaunch was taken this week with the release of Marvel Legacy #1, kicking off a host of new storylines and bringing a major Marvel character back into the fold. Marvel has done so many relaunches in the past few years that the constant restarting has irked many fans, but Marvel aims to make this one different by using it to not only bring back several classic elements that fans have been missing but restore the original numbering of many long-running series.

Now Marvel has the challenge of making good on its promises, and NYCC will be their first chance to tell the public just how they’ll be doing that. The solicitations have given us a decent idea of what to expect, but there’s nothing quite like hearing the writers, artists, and editors talk about it in person. We’ve got our eye on the panels for the X-Men, Avengers, and the “Next Big Thing” that encompasses the likes of Runaways, Daredevil and Squirrel Girl.

Panels:

Marvel Legacy: Next Big Thing

Marvel Legacy: X-Men

Marvel Legacy: Avengers

October 07, 2017, 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM (Room 1A21)

We are currently in the midst of DC’s huge Batman-centric event, Dark Nights: Metal. Batman has discovered the existence of the Dark Multiverse and unwittingly allowed seven evil Batmans to invade the DC Universe, and now the Justice League must band together to defeat them. That concept might sound ridiculous, but it’s actually been one heck of a fun ride so far, brought to you by the reunited New 52 Batman team, writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo. They’ll both be in attendance at NYCC, so we’re eager to not only hear what else is in store for this crazy event but also what to expect after it concludes.

Yup, DC has not one but two epic comics that we can’t wait to hear more about. While Dark Nights: Metal is already going, Doomsday Clock won’t hit until November. The comic will follow up on the revelation in DC Universe: Rebirth that Doctor Manhattan of the Watchmen has come to the DCU, and we'll get to see him face-off in a philosophical battle against Superman. Geoff Johns is teaming with Gary Frank and Brad Anderson to tell this story that is essentially a sequel to Watchmen, so all eyes are on them to see how they tackle such a huge undertaking.

We have been enjoying the slow, deliberate, sparse reveals leading up to this event, leaving it mostly steeped in mystery. Really, we only learn more about it when Geoff Johns teases what’s coming next, like he did at San Diego Comic-Con where he showed just a few panels of art and gave a little commentary. We expect something similar at NYCC, which is fine by us because, 1) this kind of reserved promotional treatment is almost unheard of for huge event comics, and 2) everything we’ve seen so far has been aces.
