Patrick Massett and John Zinman have signed a multi-year deal with Skydance Television to work on a number of projects, including the live-action Sword Art Online TV series.
As reported by Deadline, Massett and Zinman will write, executive produce and serve as showrunners on Skydance's upcoming television adaptation of the popular Japanese light novel and anime series.
"We're already deep in development with Patrick, John, and Laeta on our larger than life Skydance SAO series, in which we aim not only to satisfy the franchise's enthusiastic sci-fi and anime fan base but also to appeal to new TV audiences the world over," Skydance Television president Marcy Ross said.
Alita: Battle Angel and Shutter Island writer Laeta Kalogridis will write the pilot episode with Massett and Zinman, and will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Ross, Dana Goldberg and David Ellison from Skydance.
Massett and Zinman wrote the screenplay for the 2001 Angelia Jolie-led movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and have served as executive producers multiple TV shows, including Friday Night Lights and The Blacklist.
Skydance acquired the global live-action rights Sword Art Online last year and announced plans to produce a live-action adaptation that follows series protagonist Kirito, who must work with his friends to fight for survival after finding himself trapped in a virtual reality online RPG.
