IGN's Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition Cheats and Codes guide gives you the inside scoop into the best cheats, hidden codes, helpful glitches, exploits, and secrets in Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition.
When playing with a friend in a two-player game, upon running out of lives first, hold A+X to "borrow" one life from the other player, assuming there are any remaining.
On the screen where you select your in-progress game, highlight the option to erase your data, then enter one of the codes below for the corresponding effect:
- B, A, DOWN, B, UP, DOWN, DOWN, Y, A - Switch between the two players at will
- DOWN, A, R, B, Y, DOWN, A, Y - Music Test
- B, A, R, R, A, L - 50 lives
To instead practice the bonus rounds that appear throughout the adventure, enter the following button combination while the game's intro is playing: DOWN, Y, DOWN, DOWN, Y.
The level with the mine carts can be one of the most frustrating in the game, but you can skip a lot of it. Instead of jumping into the barrel near the start of the stage that fires you toward the cart you are supposed to ride, jump over it and then veer left toward the wall. You should be shot out across most of the level, saving yourself a lot of grief in the process.
Start a new game and clear the first level. Now return to that stage and lose all your lives. On the screen where Kranky Kong appears, quickly press DOWN, Y, DOWN, DOWN, Y and you will enter a special bonus area. Next, press and hold the START button, then press SELECT to exit with unlimited lives.
Travel to Threed and defeat Belch, then head for the hospital's second floor. Check the drawers in the rooms on that level, and one of them will contain the Insignificant Item. Next, take it to the hospital in Twoson, where you will find a balding man dressed in black. He's in the first room you access on the second floor, and you can trade the item for a magic truffle.
Order a pizza, then call your dad and save your progress. End the game, then reset it and load your save file. As you start playing, your pizza will be delivered.
Head to the Scaraba Desert area and look around until you spot a red insect. That is the Criminal Caterpillar, which you can defeat instantly for 20,000 EXP. Find more of the insects for still more experience, which makes it easy to level up as high as you need.
Once you have Relm in your party, explore along the coast near where you found her. Fight some monsters and kill everyone in the enemy mob except one final foe. Then have one of your other party members use Vanish to dispatch of that last monster. Sometimes, this will allow you to gain a copy of nearly every weapon in the game, as well as valuable Economizer items. However, proceed with caution because it could instead cause your game to glitch. Make sure to save your progress before attempting it.
You can kill a lot of challenging enemies (even a number of bosses) if you cast Vanish on them, then use the X-Zone spell to wipe out a group of vanished enemies, or Doom to tend to an individual.
When you battle Wrexsoul in Cyan's dream, he can sometimes put up quite a fight. You can prevent that. At the start of the battle, use the X-zone spell, which you can learn from the Esper known as Fenrir. The spell should instantly defeat your foe.
When you battle the Ghost Train, you can use a Phoenix Down item to immediately kill it.
To acquire the Chainsaw, visit the Zozo inn and set the clock to 6:10:50. A wall to the right will open, revealing a chest that you can open for the impressive loot.
Once you obtain the Falcon airship, head to the town of Narsh and speak to the old man to obtain the Cursed Shield. Equip it, and win 255 battles while it is still equipped to break the curse. Now you have the Paladin Shield, which protects you from a wide variety of ailments. Also equip the Ribbon on the same character and you'll be impervious to nearly every ailment in the game (the countdown timer still can get you, though).
One of the most useful items in the game is the Economizer, because it reduces the MP cost for all spells to 1. You can obtain it a few ways:
- Go to the Phoenix Cave with Locke in one of your parties. Steal from the Apuila (A bird creature) and you will get an Economizer. Try several times because sometimes you'll just get Fenix Downs.
- Go to the forest east of Gau's father's house. Sometimes a Brachiosaur appears. Fight it (VERY HARD) and sometimes it drops an Economizer.
- Go to the Coliseum and bet a Gem Box. If you win the battle you'll receive an Economizer.
The Moogle Charm, which prevents random encounters, is easy to find. When you first meet Mog, talk to him and he will join your party. Immediately investigate the wall behind where he was standing to receive the precious charm. Just remember to unequip it when you need to battle monsters to gain a few levels. The charm also won't prevent boss battles.
EditMaintain Speed When Jumping
Typically, when you go over a jump, you'll crash against the ground and lose around 70 km/h from your current speed. However, if you hold DOWN on your jump, you will land more gently and your ship will make an odd noise. You shouldn't suffer the usual loss of speed.
Complete any league on the Expert Class setting to gain access to the additional Master Class.
At the start of a race, the word "Ready!" appears on-screen, and three beep sounds follow. Wait for the third beep, and then immediately hit your accelerator for a nice speed boost off the starting line.
To reset the game, press R+L+START+SELECT at the same time.
As your helper is weakened and about to die, it will flash red and sparks will fly outward from its body. Quickly inhale it and swallow it, which allows you to make the helper again, this time with full health.
In the Milky Way Wishes stage, check the large star above Skyhigh to find a hidden level. Clear the level and you'll acquire the Copy ability.
Defeat all of your opponents in the Arena and you'll gain access to a special Sound Test option.
If you earn a Silver medal or better in all eight Normal courses, you'll gain access to the Extra courses.
Win a Gold medal in all eight Extra courses to access the special Sound Test.
Find a name on the Members list that you wish to change. Press and hold the L+R buttons, and press A to bring up the prompt so you can change the name.
Once you earn Gold medals in all Normal or Extra courses, the "Map Select" option appears on the title screen. It lets you choose the desired hole from the circuit you have cleared.
To see Kirby's various victory dance poses whenever you like, clear all eight Extra courses in the single-player mode. Then "Dance Select" appears as a new option on the title screen.
Most bees you find are as likely to hurt you as they are your foes. However, you can find a more helpful variety near where you obtain the Ice Rod. Enter the relevant cave through its standard opening and head toward the back wall, where a statue is waiting. Smash against it and a golden bee emerges, which you can capture with your net and store in a bottle. Now carry it with you until you're ready to release it and watch it make your foes mighty uncomfortable.
Start at the sanctuary altar and run south with the Pegasus Shoes equipped. Exit the building and run south, then stop just before you hit the barrier wall. Run west from there, and veer south once you can. You should now find yourself in a densely wooded area with guards. Head through it to reach the castle grounds, still moving quickly with the power of the shoes. Go around the castle to reach the hole you fell through when investigating the castle at the opening to the game. You will find yourself in a room with 45 blue rupees. A sign nearby will let you know that you have found Chris Houlihan's room (he won an old contest that rewarded him with recognition in the game).
Once you obtain the Hookshot, you can use it for a little help in tough scrapes. When you fire it and it extends toward the edge of the screen, enemies pass right through you until the animation concludes. Use that to your advantage if an appropriate situation arises.
Once you can lift larger boulders, head along the canyon that allows you to access the desert in the Light World. You can find a large green rock to lift. A cave waits underneath. You can enter that cave to obtain 50 rupees. Then you can exit and re-enter to repeat the process as often as needed to acquire the rupees that suit you.
When you acquire the flute, take it to the weather vane in Kakariko Village. A duck will swoop down from the air and fly you to various points on the map, indicated by numbers:
- Death Mountain
- Witch's Hut
- Kakariko Village
- Link's Cottage
- Warp Tile South of Eastern Palace
- Warp Tile in Desert
- Swamp Ruins
- South of Lake Hylia
If you're bored, slash the chickens in Kakariko Village with your sword. Strike them enough times and you'll summon a flock of angry birds that attack you until you exit to the safety of a nearby building.
To start the game with every robot monster defeated, along with every sub tank and heart tank gathered, enter the following password: 7431-3842-8523.
Collect every heart tank, sub tank, enemy weapon and power-up ahead of the first Sigma stage. Then enter Armored Armadillo's level. Work your way through the stage, until you reach the final mine cart. Hop on board and let it carry you down the slope, past the bats so that it launches out over a wide pit. Perform a dash leap out to the right, so that you grab onto the wall right near the very end of the stage. Climb up the wall to find a ledge with a large energy capsule resting on it. Grab the energy, then jump left into the pit and die on purpose. Repeat the process five times. When you reach that ledge for the fifth time, you'll find a special capsule and meet with Dr. Light's hologram. Enter the capsule to obtain a special fireball that you can use to attack only when your life meter is completely full. To unleash the fireball, you'll have to perform the Hadouken fireball move as seen in Street Fighter II: DOWN, DOWN+RIGHT, RIGHT and shoot.
You can defeat the various bosses more easily if you use the appropriate weapons on them:
- Launch Octopus - Boomerang
- Boomer Kwanger - Homing Missile
- Chill Penguin - Flamethrower
- Storm Eagle - Chameleon Sting
- Spark Mandrill - Shotgun Ice
- Armored Armadillo - Spark Shot
- Sting Chameleon - Boomerang
- Flame Mammoth - Tornado
You can temporarily prevent an enemy's magic attacks from working by using the Pygmy Hammer or Moogle Belt on the character being attacked. You have to act quickly and use the item twice before the spell animation ends. If you do so, the character that was attacked won't take any damage.
Enter a dungeon and find a chest that contains an orb. Open the chest, then use the Magic Rope to teleport to the dungeon's entrance. Find the nearest blacksmith and have him forge your desired weapon. Next, return to the dungeon you just left and repeat the process. You can keep doing this to easily forge your weapon to its final phase, but be careful not to forge after that or you will undo all that hard work!
As you are carrying a weapon, hold L+A on the first controller and press R 39 times exactly. Next, release the L+A buttons, then press R once more. If you did it properly, your weapon gauge will now display NAS, which is short for Nasir Gebelli, one of the programmers who worked on the game.
The second-to-last boss you will face is the Dark Lich. Go into battle with a couple of Fairy Walnuts in your possession. When he appears, repeatedly hit him with the the Lumina spell. Check frequently and use the spell as soon as it becomes available again. Repeat frequently to quickly wear down your foe, and have the sprite use the walnuts as needed. You should be able to defeat the Dark Lich without taking a scratch in this manner.
At the start of the game, you are banished from the village of Potos. However, you can return. When your party consists of three healthy characters, head to the gate where the guard is stationed. Start walking up against him, as if you are trying to pass through him, and repeatedly hit the SELECT button until finally you phase through him and arrive inside the village. You won't be able to escape, however, unless you make use of Flammie's Drum.
Enter Course 1, and work your way through until you arrive at the astroid belt. Proceed as normal, until the long chain of asteroids appears. Let each one come close and then destroy it. Repeat the process until you have destroyed the entire chain in that manner, at which point a new asteroid appears. This one has a face on it, which you should shoot until it turns into a black hole through which you can pass.
Once you have the Plasma Cannon, enter Course 3 and advance to the second stage. In the asteroid belt, you should find two large asteroids that are larger than others in the vicinity. Blast the lower right of those two asteroids using your Plasma Cannon. A bird appears. Fly against it with your jet to enter the special bonus stage.
Follow Slippy through all of the loops in the first level of any route to acquire the double wing blasters.
As the Ar-wing is spinning around after the game ends, you can press Y on the second controller to select an enemy. You can rotate and zoom that enemy now, just as you could the Ar-wing.
Beat the first boss of Star Fox to unlock Star Fox 2.
Collect all Pepper medals to unlock Expert Mode (Unconfirmed!).
On the surface of planets you can always pick up a Twin Blaster weapon powerup. On some planets its out in the open, in others you have to destroy an enemy or feature.
As the game is loading up, watch for the Capcom logo to disappear, then quickly enter the following button combination on the second controller: DOWN, R, UP, L, Y, B. Now you can head to the menu and choose even higher turbo speeds than normal.
As the game is initially loading, wait for the Capcom logo to appear and then quickly enter the following button combination on the first controller: DOWN, R, UP, L, Y, B. This disables special moves in single-player.
To enable the same effect in Versus mode, wait until the stage select screen and then enter the same button combination on the second controller instead.
At the beginning of the game demo, a character profile will appear. You can cycle through additional profiles if you hold L+R on the second controller.
In single-player, you will have to go up against the various fighters, one after another. If there's one you want to skip, you can press the START button on the second controller to introduce a new challenger. Beat that character, which should be the one you were about to battle, and then you can continue through the chain of opponents (but this trick will prevent you from getting the best ending, if you're aiming for that).
Just before you head up the staircase that leads to Dracula's chamber, you should spot a large drop-off that leads into an apparent abyss. That drop is deceptive, however. You can leap from the platform at the base of the stairs, over to an invisible ledge that you can follow to descend some stairs to the left. Head as far as you can in that direction to receive a huge supply of helpful power-ups to prepare you for the impending battle. Just be careful as you retrace your steps, or you may accidentally fall to your death.
You can enter the following passwords to skip to the area indicated, where H = Heart, A = Axe, P = Potion, and B is a blank space.
- 2 - BBBB PBBB BBBB PBBB
- 3 - BBBA PBBB BBBB HBBB
- 4 - BBBP PPBB BPBA BBBB
- 5 - BBBB PBBB BBBA PABB

EditLevel Select and Sound Test
You can access a hidden menu that lets you choose your starting level or listen to the game's various songs and audio effects. To do so, access the Options menu and then hover over the "Exit" option. Now, hold L+R+START on the second controller and press START on the first controller. You'll be taken to the new menu.
As you progress through the second half of Stage 5, you'll find a lot of treasure chests that allow you to earn the gold armor, just ahead of a series of avalanches. Wearing the gold armor, charge your magic spell and get near the first of the avalanches. Release the charged magic just before the avalanche hits Arthur and it will cause Arthur to become invincible for the stage's remainder. Note that he can't take any damage, except from avalanches. His shield is not invulnerable, either. However, the trick makes it much easier to survive the rest of the stage and to defeat its boss.
You can access the additional races indicated below by satisfying the corresponding requirements.
- Special Cup - Earn the gold cup in the Mushroom, Flower, and Star cups, while racing in 100cc mode.
- 150cc Circuit - Earn the gold cup in the Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special cups, while racing in 100cc mode.
If you are playing in Time Trial and you make it through a race without touching any of the sides, you'll activate a ghost rival when you select the Retry option.
To access the Special Cup in Time Trial and Match Race modes, without unlocking it through the conventional means, head into Time Trials mode and choose your racer. Press LEFT on the d-pad, so the cursor is positioned beside the Mushroom Cup. Next, enter the following button combination to access the additional cup: L, R, L, R, L, L, R, R, A.
At the start of a race, watch and listen to the starting signals carefully. As the first light finishes appearing and its sound concludes, immediately press and hold the accelerator. You must do that before the second light appears. If you timed it properly, you'll get a nice speed boost off the line. It can take awhile to get the timing right, but once you do, you can start nearly every race with a terrific boost of speed.
For an extra challenge, press and hold the Y button on the character selection screen, and press A to choose your desired racer. The driver will shrink, which makes the following races a great deal more difficult, since any collision leaves you flattened and forced to recover.
As the camera pans during the replay of your race, press the L and R buttons to swing it in the desired direction.
You can erase your data if you press L+R+Y+A on the title screen.
On the first Koopa Beach track, let the other racers pull ahead from the starting line. Turn and drive left across the shallow water, and jump out into the deep water. You want to do this so you are just ahead of the starting line as you dip into the water. Drive forward slightly and veer slightly left, so you pass to the left of the line while underwater. When Lakitu comes and pulls you out of the water, he will cause you to cross back over to the other side of the line. If you performed the above trick properly, you will receive credit for racing an entire lap.
Look for an area where you can save your progress and then find an Invincibility Star in a box nearby, such as Bandit's Way, the Kero Sewers, Land's End or Nimbus Land. Grab the star from the box and defeat as many enemies as you can while its effects last. Next, fight an enemy and let it defeat your party. Don't save your progress there. Instead, resume play from where you had last saved. You will retain any experience points and levels gained from the enemies you defeated while invincible, and the star will have returned to the box so you can repeat the process. It works even better if you have the Exp. Booster item equipped.
EditEasy Bracers and Energizers
If you want access to easy Bracers and Energizers, head to Yoshi Island and ride Yoshi. Talk to the pink Yoshi, positioned near the goal line, and it will give you 3 Yoshi Cookies that you can use to summon Yoshi. Next, head to the volcano area and battle a Oerlikon or a Magmus. Summon Yoshi in battle and he can transform the enemies into items. Oerlikons give Energizers, and the Magmus enemies will supply you with Bracers. You can talk to the pink Yoshi again when you need more cookies.
You can head to Marymore Suite to purchase Kerokerocola items, which you can buy for 150 coins and sell for 200 coins each. This is an easy way to quickly make a hefty profit, plus you sometimes receive gifts for staying at the suite.
Travel to Land's End and look for an area where an armored ant pops out from the sand. When he does, quickly jump on his head three times to receive a frog coin. You can repeat this as often as you like.
Travel to Rose Way, where you can find a room with treasure boxes. Grab the items, then exit the room. When you re-enter the room, you'll find that the boxes have returned.
You can meet characters from other Nintendo games when you satisfy certain conditions:
- Link - Spend the night at the Rose Town Inn to find him snoozing in one of the beds in the morning.
- F-Zero - To see the F-Zero racing cars, visit Hiopio's shop on Barrel Volcano.
- Samus - Once you have the 5th star, visit the Mushroom Kingdom Castle and head to the guest room to find Samus sleeping in the bed. You can also find her in action figure form at the top of Booster's Tower.
Step behind the curtained area in Booster's Tower to become a 2D character, like in the 8-bit games.
When you need a password in a ship, the password is PEARLS.
EditStar Road and Special World
You can take shortcuts all around the Mushroom Kingdom once you find Star Road, which has multiple entrances as outlined below.
Star Road 1:
- Beat Donut Plains 1 the special way by getting the key.
- There is now a spot in the water. Beat it by getting the key.
- Then you go down to a Ghost House. Proceed to first door. Go left until you find a P. Take P back to door standing in mid air. Don't enter door, though! Rather, jump up to the middle block above door. A bean stalk will come out. Follow bean stalk up to ledge. Cross ledge to blue door, making sure to hurry because the door will disappear soon. Enter blue door and defeat Big Boo to get to Star Road.
Star Road 2:
- Beat Vanilla Dome 1 by using the key.
- Vanilla Secret 1 will appear. Follow it. Make your way up until coming to a spring pod. Take the spring pod to blue blocks. These are special blocks and must be filled in first. Put the spring pad on the blue blocks. Jump up and there will be a green pipe on your left. Enter the pipe and proceed to finish line. Your Star Road will appear.
Star Road 3:
- Proceed to Forest of Illusion 1 and beat it using the key.
- Proceed to the fortress and beat it.
Star Road 4:
- Find the Cheesecake Bridge's secret exit.
- Beat the water stage that appears.
- The Star Road will appear on a nearby island.
Star Road 5:
- Find the secret exit in Valley of Bowser 4.
- A pathway will open up to the Star Road.
Star Road 6:
- Find the secret exit in Star World 5.
- A secret Star Road will open up, revealing 8 special levels.
After you beat the special levels that are revealed by finding the six Star Road entrances, you will warp back to Yoshi's island but everything will be strange. All the turtles have shells shaped like Mario's face, the bullets appear as black birds, and numerous other strange things occur. If you return to the special levels and walk back through them the way you came, the world will revert to normal.
Stay on the world map while you are in the Special World. After you stay there for around 5 minutes, a remixed version of the original Super Mario Bros. theme will start playing.
To replay a castle or fortress that you've already cleared, go to its location on the map. Hold L+R on your controller and you can re-enter the stage.
You can get one of three endings, if you meet the right requirements:
- Best Ending - Clear the game in fewer than 3 hours
- 2nd Best Ending - Clear the game while spending more than 3 hours but fewer than 10 hours
- Worst Ending - Clear the game while spending more than 10 hours on the effort
To access special shields, first have charge beam enabled and power bombs selected.
- Ice Shield - Turn on ice beam, charge up, and hit DOWN. You will have a shield of 4 ice stars. When it hits something, you lose a star and you freeze the object (note that some creatures need to be frozen by a star more than once).
- Spazer Shield - Turn on spazer, charge up, and hit DOWN. You will have spazer beams shooting everywhere for a short amount of time.
- Wave shield - Turn on wave, charge up, and hit DOWN. A big 'X' will guard you for a short amount of time.
NOTE: The above shields won't work if you don't have power bombs selected and charge beam enabled, and if you have any other beam enabled besides charge and one of your other beams.
There is a trick that allows you to refill your drained energy, if you have fewer than 49 energy units and possess at least 10 or more missiles, super missiles, and power bombs.
To refill your energy, first choose the power bomb icon and morph. Now, press and hold L+R and the shot buttons, and hold DOWN on the d-pad. You'll absorb the resulting blast, which fills your energy.
Play through the game until you acquire the gravity suit, which allows you to move freely underwater. Next, find a location that has been fully submerged. With the suit equipped, press and hold the button to jump. Immediately pause the game and access your inventory menu. Remove the gravity suit and then press and hold the jump button again. Unpause the game and the jump you initiated will carry you much higher than normal, which allows you to leap very high. The trick is most useful if you want to acquire the screw attack ability before you find the space jump.
Normally, green gates on Zebes can prevent you from progressing in directions you might wish to explore, but there is a way around that. First, make sure you are standing to the right of a green gate through which you would like to pass, with the gate's tab facing left. Stand at a distance of 5 or so tiles from the gate. Hold the button to run toward the gate. Right ahead of the gate, quickly tap the jump button and at the same time aim to the upper left and fire a super missile. If you timed the maneuver properly, which takes some practice, you'll be able to pass through the gate from the wrong side. This lets you sequence break the game in some cases.
The chamber where you battle Draygon contains four electrical turrets near its corners. Start the fight by quickly blasting them out of your way with charge shots. Electricity will still emanate from their former locations, which is just fine. Equip the grapple beam next, and let Draygon grab you once he arrives on the scene. As he swings you around the room, use the beam to latch onto the panel where one of the turrets was previously positioned. This turns you into an electrical conduit, which will electrocute your foe until he finally perishes.
Earn a 4-0 record in the Minor, Major, and World circuits to unlock the Special Circuit.
If you beat the Special Circuit without losing a match, you'll be able to view a secret ending.
Narcis Prince thinks an awful lot of his face, so you can rearrange it for him to make the match go much more smoothly. Watch for him to stand still and blink 4 times. When he does that, he will follow up the final blink with a punch, but first there is a window of opportunity. Use that instant to hit him in the face with a quick jab, which enrages him and causes him to flounder for quite a while. Then you can harm him much more easily until he recovers from his shock.
When you first turn on the game, before Nintendo's logo fades, hold L+R on the second controller. Then you can access a menu with the first controller and select sounds to play.
If you highlight the "New Game" option and press X+A on your controller, you can enter your name using Japanese characters.
EditYoshi's Island
You can play the mini-games whenever you like. At the level selection screen, hold the SELECT button while you enter the following button combination: X, X, Y, B, A.
At the end of each world map are two '?' boxes. Earn 100 on every other level in that world and the boxes are replaced with new levels you can challenge.
Visit Sluggy the Unshaven's fort and enter the door to the left from the entrance. Then use a POW or '?' item. A door should appear, and you can enter it to receive a secret code.
In level 5-8, getting the full 100 points can be tricky due to a flower and a few red coins most players miss. To easily collect them, head to the second rotating wooden beam and jump into the gap between that beam and solid ground. You'll find a train room, where you can hold Y to accelerate. Drive around the tracks to gather the missing trinkets and a perfect score.
You can make stars appear next to the logo on the title screen. To do so, clear every level in a particular world, including those you unlock by clearing the other levels. You can make as many as six stars appear near the logo, by perfectly clearing every stage in each of the six worlds.
