Spider-Man: Homecoming Becomes 4th Film of 2017 to Pass Domestic Box Office Milestone

Spider-Man: Homecoming has crossed another $100 million milestone at the domestic box office, but how does the film's local and worldwide cume stack up to other MCU and Spider-Man films?

Sony Pictures announced that, as of today, Homecoming has amassed an estimated $300 million at the U.S. box office and $682 million worldwide. Peter Parker's first solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe scored the highest-ever debut weekend for a superhero in the MCU, though it then suffered the largest second-weekend drop of Marvel Studios' universe.

Having made $300 million domestically, Homecoming is now the ninth-highest grossing MCU film, both adjusted and unadjusted for inflation, in the U.S., and the eighth-highest grossing movie worldwide for the MCU. (Its worldwide total just edges past Doctor Strange's total box office haul.)

As for comparisons to other Spider-Man films, Homecoming is currently the fourth-highest grossing, both adjusted and unadjusted, domestically, trailing behind all three of Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man films. However, there is one important caveat to Spider-Man: Homecoming's worldwide box office total — the film is only opening in Japan today and will not be released in China, one of the world's largest cinematic markets, until September 8.

Homecoming is now one of four films to cross that $300 million mark in 2017 — Beauty and the Beast, Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, and Homecoming.

A look at Spider-Man's armor in Avengers: Infinity War was recently revealed, while Homecoming's director Jon Watts is reportedly returning for the sequel, which hits theaters un July 5, 2019.

Meanwhile, Sony is planning its own Marvel universe based on various characters from the Spider-Man Marvel comics separate from Spider-Man's inclusion in the MCU. Recent reports have suggested each film in that universe will aim to have its own distinct style.
