Rick and Morty Studio Seeks Funding for Fantasy Book

Dan Harmon's Starburns Industries is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.

Starburns Industries, the studio co-founded by Rock and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon, is holding a Kickstarter campaign to raise $37,000 to finance publication of its 182-page illustrated dark fantasy novel, The Crawling King.

The book, designed by award-winning animator Einar Baldvin, centers around the doomed city of Gyldenbrae and presents the legends, fables, manuscripts, first-hand accounts and historical documents of the surrounding region. Each page has already been completed and has been dirtied, damaged, torn and had its edges burnt by hand prior to being photographed on black velvet.

As with almost all Kickstarter campaigns, you can donate any amount you're comfortable with, but there are different contribution tiers. A $5 contribution will snag you a digital thank-you letter from the treasury of King Amelius I, a $50 contribution will land you a digital copy of The Crawling King, a digital thank-you letter, a high quality print of an infested portrait, and a digital download of the "Mr.Scarafaggio" short story. Higher-end tiers will allow for even more rewards upon publication of the book.

Finally, Starburns Industries acknowledges that there are risks to the Kickstarter campaign, but has offered the following warning and words of reassurance to potential donors:

It is never advisable to delve into a tome of ancient evil. Neither is acquiring idols from a doomed kingdom. Consider yourself warned.

We are ready to face that mad sorcerer, The Printer, as long as our purse fills with your contributions.

Acquiring idols, shrunken buildings and other horrors is time consuming and dangerous but we are confident in our abilities to deliver those to you in a timely manner. Should any of our agents meet a tragic end, others will be sent. Do not despair!

Starburns Industries has been involved in the production of various projects, including the Kickstarted Charlife Kauffman film Anomalisa and Dan Harmon's co-created series Rick and Morty. As of press time, the campaign has reached $23,000 of its $37,000 funding goal. Check out The Crawling King's Kickstarter page for a more expansive look at the book's art.
