Pokemon Gold and Silver Receiving Boxed Re-Release for 3DS

A different kind of PokeBox.

The 3DS Virtual Console versions of Pokemon Gold & Silver will be getting a boxed release - but the boxes will contain a download code.

Announced by Nintendo of Europe on Twitter (below), the boxed versions will be released on September 22:

It's not clear what else - if anything - the boxes will contain.

As announced back in June, these are original Game Boy Color versions of the second-generation Pokemon games, not the HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes.

However, they will allow for 3DS wireless communication for trading and battling, as well as the Time Capsule feature that allows second-gen Pokemon to be sent back into the Virtual Console versions of Blue and Red.

It's going to be a busy end of year for Pokemon - aside from this, Pokken Tournament DX will be released for Nintendo Switch on the same day, September 22, and we also have Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon on November 17.

After that? Well, it's just the small matter of a core Pokemon RPG for Nintendo Switch.
