Pokemon Go: 2 Million Players Played Pikachu Outbreak Event

Shinies and successes.

Pokemon Go's Japan-only Pikachu Outbreak event garnered 2 million players in its 7 day duration, with over 120 million Pokemon caught.

Niantic provided details of the Yokohama event - which introduced new Shiny Pokemon and the long-awaited Mewtwo - after it closed.

Held in Yokohama, the event turned kilometers of real-life spaces into Pokemon Go Park, and finished with thousands of trainers competing at Pokemon Go Stadium, attempting to capture Mewtwo to a backdrop of fireworks and giant Pokemon projections.

Speaking to IGN, Niantic made it clear that it had learned from the mistakes of its controversial Pokemon Go Fest in Chicago.

All Japanese network carriers were given advance notice of the event, with servers segmented during the Mewtwo Raid finale to make absolutely sure players would be able to get their prize. The way Pokemon were spawned across Yokohama also encouraged players to walk around the festival area, rather than stay in one place.

It will hopefully set the standard for the many real-world events still set to take place this year.
