Johnny Depp Producing The Secret World TV Show

The Secret World is coming to the small screen.

The Secret World - the supernatural MMO universe created by Conan: Exiles developer Funcom - is coming to TV.

As reported by Deadline, Infinitum Nihil - the production company founded by Johnny Depp - is partnering with Gudrun Giddings of G4C Innovation to produce a television series based on the MMO, which was recently relaunched in a new free-to-play flavour as Secret World Legends.

The Secret World takes place in a version of present-day Earth with a heavy emphasis on myths, horror and the supernatural; players find themselves cast in the role of supernatural heroes aligned to one of three organisations - Templars, Illuminati and the Dragon - and join the fight against a variety of dark monsters threatening humankind, whilst also navigating the rivalry between the three factions.

This rivalry will seemingly be central to the TV series, which is being written by James V. Hart (Hook) and James Hart, with Pam Veasey (CSI: NY) on board as showrunner. The show will centre around the activities of a group of 'undercover agents', although no information has yet been revealed on whether this team is allied to any of the three factions in particular.

Along with Veasey, Johnny Depp and Gudrun Giddings will produce alongside Infinitum Nihil's Christi Dembrowski and Sam Sarkar.

Giddings optioned the media rights to The Secret World back in 2012 and has been developing the project with Sarkar. He spoke enthusiastically of the "fantastical storylines" and "intriguing characters" possible in a Secret World TV series, with Sarkar adding enigmatically, "This is the secret story of the people who rule the people who rule the world".

There's currently no word of a projected release for the series.
