GoT: Gilly Revealed a Game-Changing Targaryen Secret

The most important annulment in all of Westeros.

Full spoilers for Game of Thrones: Season 7 episode "Eastwatch" continue below. This post also includes key speculation and book spoilers about the parentage of Jon Snow. Read on at your own risk.

If only Samwell Tarly could not have cut Gilly off right then. Thank goodness he and Shireen taught her to read, though, because she just half-revealed one of the most game-changing, mic drop bits of information Game of Thrones has ever seen.

For context, Gilly was reading from Maester Maynard's book in Oldtown when she comes across a line that reads: "Maynard says here that he issued an annulment for Prince Rhaegar and re-married him to someone else at the same time in a secret ceremony in Dorne."

This is significantly important. Why? Because it could mean that Jon Snow is a legitimate Targaryen, not a bastard like we all thought for many years. Bear with us.

A popular, near-confirmed fan theory is that Jon Snow is the bastard son of Lyanna Stark (proven last season) and Rhaegar Targaryen. At the time of Rhaegar's supposed tryst with Lyanna, he was married to Elia Martell, the sister of Oberyn Martell, and father to the now-dead Aegon Targaryen and Rhaenys Targaryen. (This is a huge reason why Oberyn came to King's Landing to take down the Lannisters and Gregor Clegane.)

With Gilly's revelation, we have learned that Jon might not be a bastard after all, though, if Rhaegar got an annulment to Elia and remarried Lyanna. Instead, this marriage would make him a true-born Targaryen, which means that not only is Daenerys not the last Targaryen alive, but she's also not the only one with a very, very likely claim to the Iron Throne.

This revelation was further cemented earlier in the episode. When Daenerys landed back in Dragonstone aboard Drogon, the dragon dropped down right in front of Jon. The two shared a very long scene where Drogon not only acknowledged the supposed bastard son of Ned Stark, but let him touch his face. Daenerys seemed to understand this moment was significant, but might not have picked up on the "why."

There is absolutely an attraction brewing between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, and for all you 'shippers out there, we know well enough that an aunt and a nephew getting together isn't the craziest incest the Targaryens have ever partaken in. But despite the romance potentially in the works, the more significant conversation is the fact that these two could soon be at odds with one another.

Jon Snow's current plan is to bring a wight back to King's Landing and convince Cersei Lannister that the threat of the Night King is real. In doing so, he hopes to halt the war in Westeros and put Daenerys and Cersei's showdown on pause so they all can focus on the threat to the North. But if Daenerys finds out she isn't the only Targaryen left to claim the Iron Throne, will she be so quick to ally herself with her potential rival? To play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die, after all.
