FX Networks President John Landgraf offered a host of updates about a number of FX series, including the upcoming Deadpool animated series, Fargo, Louie, and more.
Speaking to FX's untitled animated Deadpool animated series, Landgraf said the series will be a distinct take on the character.
"It will be really different from the [Deadpool] movies," Landgraf said. "It has a different tone and and editorial voice, as evidenced by the fact that Donald Glover and Stephen Glover, who certainly have their own voice and their own tone are creating it. I think we did that because we wanted to make something that was distinctly different from the movies, which are great."
As for when it will air, Landgraf had no specific updates — the original announcement dated it for a 2018 premiere.
"It's got to be great," he said of the network taking its time with the project and accommodating Donald Glover's schedule. According to Landgraf, the Community star wrote season 2 of Atlanta before going to London to shoot the untitled Han Solo film in which he plays Lando Calrissian, where he also had a writing staff working on Deadpool. Following the end of Star Wars filming, which Glover recently addressed that film's director switch, he'll return to shoot Atlanta's second season and simultaneously begin animating production on Deadpool.
Landgraf also addressed FX shows in some state of limbo, including Fargo, and Louie.
On the latter, which recently wrapped its third season, Landgraf said the network hasn't yet heard about an idea for a fourth season of the show, which is Noah Hawley's second on FX in addition to Legion.
"What we encouraged Noah to do is think about it and make sure he has something he's really, really excited about and believes in. So, there's at least some possibility he won't have that idea for some period of time and I think there's also the possibility...that we'll hear that idea fairly soon.
He has a really busy schedule, though. He's actively working on Legion Season 2," Landgraf continued, also saying FX has to share Hawley's time with his burgeoning film work. At San Diego Comic-Con, Hawley teased he's working on a film involving Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom.
Another uncertain return for the network is Louie, which last aired in 2015. Landgraf said there has been no update from creator Louis C.K. about if or when the series will return, but he views it as a similar situation to Fargo.
I also think it's possible there may be four or five more seasons of Louie over the next 30 years."
"I really don't have any update on Season 6. I think it's possible there will never be another season on Louie, and I also think it's possible there may be four or five more seasons of Louie over the next 30 years," Landgraf said.
"I think he's changed a lot since he made the last season of Louie. I think he had run out of things to say about that time in his life. ... To him, it was starting to feel a little false," Landgraf said, noting that C.K. wrestled with taking the character of Louie on a similar trajectory of success as he experienced in real life or to take some time off.
C.K. echoed that sentiment during FX's Better Things panel, saying "i don't think i'll do that [form of the show] again because i haven't been that guy for awhile.
"I don't think about it much," he continued, explaining he's focused on producing other projects and stand-up.
Landgraf also touched on the Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans MC, which was reported to undergo reshoots and recasting after the pilot had been filmed. A brief clip from the series was shown during the TCAs panel, and Landrgaf said the network is excited about Mayans' development.
"I’m very confident of the future of the spinoff," he said, estimating it would be about three months before the network makes a decision about whether to pick up the show. "The fact that almost the entire cast of the show is Latino is awesome. There are familiar faces and a lot of new actors we found."
