Doctor Who: David Tennant 'Not Shocked' By Uproar

Takes one to know one.

Since the announcement that Jodie Whittaker would be taking over from Peter Capaldi as the new lead of the BBC's long-running sci-fi Doctor Who, the Internet has been rife with discussion over the decision to cast a woman as the Doctor for the first time in the show's near-54 year history.

While many have welcomed the casting as a progressive step forward for the show, there has been a vocal minority that has strongly opposed the idea - and no one is less surprised than former Doctor David Tennant.

As Vulture reports, Tennant appeared on The Late Show earlier this week, where the topic of Whittaker's casting came up, revealing that he faced his own kind of backlash when taking over from Christoper Ecclestone - his 'weaselly face' being one point of particular concern - and sharing that he thinks it's par for the course with a new actor inhabiting such an iconic role - "whenever the Doctor changes there’s a backlash because that’s a character that people love, so people get very affectionate about the Doctor they knew".

Tennant also wholeheartedly endorsed the new Doctor, calling her casting "brilliant" and revealing he's "delighted" at the idea of the Doctor becoming a woman. He's also a friend of Whittaker's from their time working (along with new showrunner Chris Chibnall) on ITV's well-received Broadchurch, and says she called him in a "tunnel of excitement and panic" just before the announcement.

As for any long-lasting damage to the show caused by Whittaker's casting? The Tenth Doctor isn't worried."That will be irrelevant almost immediately," he predicts.

Doctor Who will return with "Twice Upon a Christmas" - Capaldi's swansong - on Christmas Day.
