Boruto Episode 20 Review

Share.

Seeing eye to eye.

Warning: The following review has spoilers for the episode.

Boruto is finally back in the swing of things, thanks not to its titular hero, but instead the determined Sarada Uchiha. To learn more about her father she sets her eyes on Naruto, but gets much more than she bargained for upon venturing out. The episode wastes little time, packing in as much action and story as it can in 20 minutes, stopping just short of next week’s important encounter.

Sarada is on her way to confront Naruto when she overhears him saying he is on his way to meet with Sasuke. Seeing an opportunity, she tails him, but encounters a strange foe along the way: a boy with Sharingan eyes. Naruto steps in to help, and agrees to help Sarada (and ChoCho) join him to go see Sasuke.

I am happy to see the show step away from the school life drama in favor of a more character focused, traditional Naruto story. The show has ambitions to be a ninja epic like its predecessor but hasn’t really shown the potential outside of a few short fights. The encounter with the mysterious Sharingan user, Shin, felt simultaneously exciting and important. That is to say, it feels like it actually matters within the world of Naruto. Compared to the filler stories we have been seeing in the past few episodes, the introduction of a new foe (especially a new Uchiha) is incredibly exciting.

Of course, it wouldn’t be classic Naruto without a fight scene, and this episode delivers on that front as well with a battle between Naruto and the Sharingan user. The encounter doesn’t get much screen time but it makes the most of what it has, featuring an appearance by the Nine-Tailed Beast and a quick demonstration of the Sharingan user’s strange powers. Even Sarada and ChoCho get a moment to show off before Naruto swoops in to rescue them. The fight feels like more of a tease than anything, but gives me hope that these powerhouses will face off more properly in the future.

The only odd detail of the episode was how quickly they sidelined Boruto in favor of his more popular father. The scenes of Naruto running alongside Sarada and ChoCho can’t help but look a little strange when we know Boruto is sitting idly in Konoha (though they do make for a cute throwback to Naruto’s Team 7 days). Perhaps this Uchiha-focused story doesn’t concern him, but a small part of me can’t help but hope that, as the show’s namesake, he has some place in the grand scheme of things.

But by the end of the episode that detail is all but forgotten, replaced by the excitement of heading into new territory. This is by far the strongest Boruto episode in recent memory, not only advancing the main story with legitimately exciting scenes, but deepening our understanding of Sarada along the way. For the first time since the Sumire story I was sad to see an episode end; a good sign that this arc is starting on the right foot.

The Verdict

Sarada’s hunt for Sasuke lands her in the middle of an Uchiha Clan mystery, providing an excellent start to this new arc. “The Boy with the Sharingan” wastes no time moving the story along, introducing a new foe via battles with both Sasuke and Naruto. Though the action is brief, the episode provides great insight into Sarada’s woes and ends on a great cliffhanger.
