Nintendo revealed amiibo are not required to access Hard Mode in Metroid: Samus Returns.
During a demonstration with Nintendo in which we tested out all the Metroid amiibo functionality in the upcoming 3DS title, we learned Hard Mode is accessible to all players after they complete the game for the first time.
This comes after speculation access to harder difficulties was only available through the new squishy Metroid amiibo, announced at E3 this year, unlocking Fusion Mode after the game's completion.
Nintendo explained while Fusion Mode does require access to the Metroid amiibo, it is not the same as Hard Mode. Instead, Fusion Mode is an additional level of difficulty on top of Hard Mode and it is recommended that players give Hard Mode a try first before taking on the challenge.
We managed to get a full hands on with Metroid: Samus Returns and so far it appears to be a welcome upgrade to the original. The reimagining of the Game Boy title will release for 3DS on September 15 alongside this sweet Samus Edition New 3DS XL.
