Earlier this year I travelled to Atlanta, Georgia to visit the set of Marvel’s Black Panther. The Ryan Coogler directed film promises to showcase T’Challa and his homeland of Wakanda in all of it’s Afro-Futuristic glory.
On a cool Friday morning in February, a group of 19 journalists gathered on folding chairs under a pop-up tent (that was surrounded by tarp behind us and on each side) to look at a TV. What we saw on the screen was a the filming of a scene featuring CIA Agent, Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) interrogating arms dealer and mercenary, Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) in a safehouse, while T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and later Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), watch the conversation from behind mirrored glass.
In the scene, there is more tension behind the glass than in front of it. Klaue is one of the only outsiders to ever see the real Wakanda, and T’Challa can’t be too happy about him revealing what he knows to Ross. Before too much info is revealed, the Hobbit cast reunion is quickly cut short by an explosion, which signals the end of the shot.
Much of the scene we saw filmed that day can be seen at the beginning of the first Black Panther trailer, which you can see below.
While on set we got some time to talk to executive producer Nate Moore, who was also a producer on Captain America: Civil War. Moore was able to reveal a lot about the film, which you can check out in the slideshow below.
