Star Wars Rebels Won’t End with Rogue One’s Battle of Scarif

Dave Filoni on why he would like to see that story from the Ghost's perspective - but not in the fourth and final season of Rebels.

While we know at least a couple of Star Wars Rebels characters were present for the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Rebels co-creator Dave Filoni cautions that we shouldn’t expect to see the animated series tackle a re-telling of the events of that film from a different perspective in the final season.

An exciting inclusion in Rogue One for fans was seeing elements from Star Wars Rebels make it into the film. Chopper makes an onscreen appearance, while a page for “General Syndulla” lets us know that Hera is on the Rebel base on Yavin right before the Battle of Scarif – and we then see the Rebels ship, the Ghost, take part in that battle.

At Star Wars Celebration, I asked Filoni if we might get to the Battle of Scarif in Season 4 (see the video at the top of the page), and he replied, “I think it’s possible to tell the Rebels side of it, I just don’t know that I would do it in Star Wars Rebels. I think that there’s probably a fantastic story there about what exactly the Ghost is doing and who exactly is on board the Ghost, which I think is a big question. So I think there is a story there - but would we see that in Star Wars Rebels? I wouldn’t think so.”

Filoni elaborated that he felt, “This story, Star Wars Rebels, doesn’t work in service of ending in somebody else’s film or storyline. That’s Jyn’s story. This is Ezra’s story. I just don’t think there’s something that’s that important that could have been going on there. I think it’s important to keep them separate. It’s nice that they acknowledge each other. It’s nice that Saw is in Rebels and then he’s also in Rogue One. It’s nice that we have these bridges. Mon Mothma is also a bridge. Yavin itself becomes a bridge. That creates the continuity but I think getting too specific, because we would be locked in in that battle.”

With Rebels wrapping up next season, Filoni also explained he didn’t feel it would be satisfying enough if the show culminated in the Battle of Scarif. “Imagine if that was the final episode and we’re locked into that battle and you know how the battle ends already," Filoni remarked. "You might not know what happened to them but you know how the battle ends and that might not be so exciting. It’s great as a continuity thing and it’s a fun exercise but I don’t think it would make a very good end to a series.”
