'No Guarantee' of Star Trek 4 Being Made

"I’m hopeful that we’ll do another one," says Spock actor Zachary Quinto.

While Spock actor Zachary Quinto is optimistic about Star Trek 4, he admitted there's a chance the follow-up film might not happen.

Speaking on The Today Show (and spotted by SlashFilm), Quinto discussed where things stood with Star Trek 4. "I know that they are working on a script for another one and we’ll see how that all plays out, but the nice thing about that experience is that the time in between those big tentpole films allows us to go off and cultivate a lot of different creative experiences for ourselves.

"… I’m hopeful that we’ll do another one, but there’s no guarantee."

Star Trek 4 was officially announced in July, just days before Star Trek Beyond hit the box office. But the third film underperformed compared to the first two entries in the rebooted franchise, leading to speculation about the continuation of the series. Quinto's comments do imply that the fourth film is yet to be greenlit.

That said, in March, Viacom CEO Robert M. Bakish seemed to imply Star Trek 4 was a go. He mentioned that the sci-fi series was a major tentpole for the company, comparing it to Transformers and Mission: Impossible.

If Star Trek 4 does happen, the film will see the return of Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk, who's the father of Chris Pine's James T. Kirk. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are writing the script.
