Get Out Broke This Record Long-Held by The Blair Witch Project

Jordan Peele's debut is still going strong.

Jordan Peele's stellar horror flick Get Out has beaten The Blair Witch's record for the highest-grossing debut for a writer-director based on an original screenplay.

As reported by Forbes, Get Out has now raked in $150 million in domestic (US) sales, which means it has eclipsed the $140 million garnered by The Blair Witch Project in 1999. Get Out has been wildly successful from the get go, debuting with $33.377 million on its opening weekend. It cost less than $5 million to produce.

Get Out was still travelling well in the domestic box office this weekend, whereas the Ghost in the Shell live-action reboot, with its  $110 million production budget, had an underwhelming debut.

Peele was recently rumoured to be in discussions to direct the live-action remake of Akira. Here's what the filmmaker had to say about subverting audience expectations.
