Dark Phoenix Film Officially Happening, Releasing in 2018

Three X-Men films are coming in 2018.

2018 will be a major release year for the X-Men film universe, as 20th Century Fox has dated three mutant movies for next year.

IGN can confirm that the New Mutants film will be released in theaters on April 13, 2018. Fox will then debut Deadpool 2, which recently had Josh Brolin cast as Cable, on June 1, 2018. Finally, the third and final X-Men film of the year, Dark Phoenix, will be released on November 2, 2018.

The dating of Dark Phoenix confirms earlier reports that suggested the next upcoming X-Men film, reportedly first known as X-Men: Supernova, would revisit the Jean Grey/Phoenix saga, with Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner returning to her role as Grey following 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse. Turner recently discussed when the next X-Men film might start shooting.

An adaptation of the Dark Phoenix saga would line up with X-Men series producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently having said future X-Men films would move beyond the Magneto/Professor X dynamic. Producer Simon Kinberg, who is rumored to possibly be directing the next X-Men film, talked about lessons learned from Apocalypse, which included nods to the possibility of a Phoenix storyline.

The Dark Phoenix Saga, written by Chris Claremont, is an X-Men comics storyline featuring Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force in which the powerful telepath eventually transforms into Dark Phoenix, one of the universe's greatest threats. Elements of the storyline were featured in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.

Deadpool 2, meanwhile, will feature Brolin as Cable, Zazie Beetz as Domino, and a new director in John Wick's David Leitch. Several characters from the first Deadpool are also confirmed to be returning, including Leslie Uggams as Deadpool's roommate Blind Al. The film's writers recently discussed including Cable and Domino in the sequel, as well as what Leitch brings to the production.

A Deadpool 2 teaser recently premiered behind the latest film in the X-Men universe, Logan, earlier this year.

A New Mutants film has been reported in the works since 2015, with director Josh Boone recently intimating that Maisie Williams may have a role. The Witch's Anya Taylor-Joy and The Fault in Our Stars' Nat Wolff have also been rumored to be part of the New Mutants team. Taylor-Joy previously spoke to IGN about her excitement about the possibility of the project.

Boone has also hinted at which mutants might be in the film's lineup, including Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot, Magik, and Warlock.

An X-Men pilot for Fox currently called Gifted is also in production, while the second season of FX's Legion will also release in 2018.
