"I'm still holding a gun, I just point it at different people."

Full spoilers for 24: Legacy continue below.

Ibrahim Bin-Khalid is alive…and he doesn’t look too good.

We predicted this last week and in effect lost some of it’s impact, but his appearance was a different kind of shocking. I do not envy the makeup department. Two-Face jokes aside, his deformity worked for me. One of the first things we learned in the pilot was that Ibrahim Bin-Khalid was dead; if you are going to do a “Surprise! He’s alive!” storyline at least make it look believable.

HEY YOU GUYS!!! Jadalla should have had more of a reaction at seeing his father. Not even his father’s Sloth-like appearance can illicit a reaction from this newly un-orphaned son. The moment they shared was oddly sweet, as sweet as two terrorists embracing can be. It looks like my reformed Jadalla theory from last week missed the mark for a couple of reasons. The first reason being that if anything, Jadalla seemed more focused on getting revenge. The second reason, and the real nail in my theory’s coffin, being the younger Bin-Khalid’s death.

Jadalla is dead. I am of two minds on this. On one hand, I liked Jadalla as a villain and it feels a bit cheap for him not to be killed in a more personal way. On the other hand, Carter lining up a sniper and taking him out with a single shot is the more “24” move. Jadalla’s death will lead to an unhinged Ibrahim, which is a very bad thing considering Rebecca appears to be in his custody at the end of the episode.

The Carter and Rebecca pairing has been the duo I have wanted to see since the show began, and the two of them working together did not disappoint. These two are the show’s standout new characters and it’s criminal they have not shared more screen time. While the most flashy moments they had may have involved shootouts and stick ups, the best moments were the quiet conversations in the car. While they are willing to give everything for their country, they may have ultimately lost the people that matter most. Nicole is on the verge of leaving Carter. John, on the other hand, was being held hostage by terrorist, further proving he is having the worst day.

John’s conversation with Naseri in the back of the van was the highlight of his story. In all of the show’s bombastic action and over-the-top set pieces it is easy to lose sight of the characters and their goals. In a few lines of dialogue John and Naseri perfectly sum up the different viewpoints presented in this show. John thinks Bin-Khalid is a monster that murders innocents, and Naseri thinks the same thing about Rebecca. The show takes a moment to slow down and remind you that while the terrorists are absolutely the bad guys, there is room for some grey area. This isn't really new territory, nor is it presented in a very deep and thought provoking way, but the show should be commended for at least trying. There is nothing wrong with a little philosophy in your action show.

We are not quite done with Tony Almeida, and that is definitely a good thing. Tony has been unutilized to date; I see him playing a bigger role as the series marches towards the finale. At his introduction the show took time to explain Tony and Rebecca’s past relationships, and that needs to be made good on. This is 24 and this is Tony Almeida, he simply cannot have a happy ending. He will drop everything to save Rebecca, losing his current relationship, and possibly his freedom in the process. We might actually get to see a Tony/Carter action scene!

The field on fire scene was a little much. Don’t get me wrong -- It was visually striking -- it’s just a very inefficient way to murder someone… I assume. The timeline also raises a few questions. Naseri is able to get to the field before Carter, grab Rebecca, and get away in about 45 seconds of perceived screen time. I’m not saying it is impossible, just improbable. Also, if the field on fire was how they wanted to kill Rebecca after her confession, how will Carter escape? How did Naseri? The last couple minutes of this episode were sloppy and do the one “unforgivable” of 24: it makes you question the real-time clock.

The Verdict

A couple of engaging conversations and a football field on fire carried this middling episode. It was a treat to finally see Rebecca and Carter have time to talk things out. Also a cool football field on fire.
