We Happy Few: Pitch Perfect Producers to Adapt Compulsion Game Into a Movie

The movie is very early in development.

A movie adaptation of the upcoming dystopian video game We Happy Few is in the works.

Variety reports developer Compulsion Games has partnered with Pitch Perfect producer Gold Circle Entertainment and the producer of the recently-announced Sleeping Dogs movie, dj2 Entertainment, on the project.

Compulsion Games revealed on Twitter that the film is still a long ways out, as fans "will see the game way before the movie comes out."

No director is attached to the project yet and the producers are still looking for writers. The film reportedly remains "true to the source material, while still surprising fans" and will retain the game's "menace, dark humor, and central themes.”

We Happy Few takes place during an alternate-1960s in an isolated English town where its citizens are forced to take a hallucinogenic drug called "Joy." While the drug keeps people happy, it also leaves them easily controlled. The story follows one resident free of the drug determined to uncover the mystery behind the town and why it's essentially an open-air prison.

While the video game doesn't have a release date yet, We Happy Few has been in early access since 2016. Check out IGN's preview of the game.
