Writer Marc Guggenheim | Artist Ardian Syaf (Marvel Comics)
The launch of X-Men Gold #1 marks the start of a new, brighter era for the X-Men, or at least that’s what the folks at Marvel Comics have been touting with their ResurrXion revamp. The X-Men have had it rough the past several years thanks to their war with the Inhumans over the mutant-killing Terrigen Cloud, not to mention the seeming notion of “Marvel hates the X-Men” looming overhead like a dark, corporate cloud. But now it looks like the House of Ideas is throwing their full weight behind mutant-kind and bringing back elements from their most beloved era, the ‘90s, and that means the return of the Gold and Blue teams.
Kitty Pryde is finally leader of the X-Men, heading up the Gold team consisting of Old Man Logan, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Rachel Grey (who now sports a new costume and goes by Prestige). Writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Ardian Syaf are taking things back to basics, showing the new team striving to be a force for good in a world that hates and fears them.
With a powerhouse team, strong comic talent, and a return to core X-Men values, this book certainly has us excited for the future of the X-franchise.
Writer Al Ewing | Artist Jonboy Meyers (Marvel Comics)
On the other side of the RessurXion coin is the new Inhumans book, Royals. Featuring the Inhuman royal family and a few NuHumans, this is a space adventure with a quest to find the secrets of where Inhumans’s Terrigen chemical came from. With the last remaining Terrigen destroyed during Inhumans vs. X-Men, the Inhuman leaders face the extinction of their kind, so this will be a mission for survival. Going into the book, we already know that seven will embark on this journey, but only six will return, which certainly raises the stakes before even opening Page One.
Writer Al Ewing has been on a hot streak with The Ultimates, New Avengers, and Loki: Agent of Asgard, so teaming him with Jonboy Meyers, the Spawn artist who recently impressed us with his far-too-short stint on Teen Titans, feels like a recipe for success.
Plus, there’s a new Inhumans TV show on the horizon, so if you want to be In The Know before it airs, this will most likely be a good place to do some learnin’.
Writer Tom King | Artists David Finch & Danny Miki (DC Comics)
Bane has been tearing through Gotham and punched just about everyone you can imagine on his way to the high-security cell holding Psycho Pirate, who he wants so badly. Seriously, he’s punched Batman, Batman again, Two-Face, Solomon Grundy, Amygdala, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Firefly, Black Spider, Flamingo, Man-Bat, Zsasz, Mad Hatter, Dr. Phosphorus, Hush, and Copperhead. That’s a whole lot of punching. And from how last issue ended with the flexing of muscles and the clenching of teeth and the making of fists, it looks like this week’s finale to “I Am Bane” will see the most punching of all.
Keep reading for Wolverine, Star Wars, and more!
