The Fate of the Furious Tops Box Office for Second Weekend

The Promise, Unforgettable disappoint in their debuts.

The Fate of the Furious held strong in first place at the domestic box office for its second consecutive week, while Unforgettable and The Promise had underwhelming debuts.

Universal's eighth Fast and the Furious film, which surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens with the biggest worldwide opening of all time, earned an estimated $38.7 million at the domestic box office. As noted by Variety, this marks a 61 percent drop from its $100.2 million domestic debut last week.

That said, the film continues to perform incredibly well internationally. The current foreign total for The Fate of the Furious stands at an impressive $744.8 million, with its worldwide total now at a staggering $908.4 million.

Meanwhile, Unforgettable underwhelmed in its box office debut, placing seventh with an estimated $4.8 million. Director Denise Di Novi new thriller, starring Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson, had a production budget of approximately $12 million. This weekend also brought with it the debut of The Promise, which disappointed in its opening weekend as well. The Terry George-directed history drama, starring Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon and Christian Bale, placed ninth with an estimated $4.1 million, and cost $90 million to make.
